Augmented and Virtual Reality supported Mission Operations

Identify best technology supporting augmented/virtual reality into different elements of operational data systems, including mission planning, monitoring and control and operational simulator elements 

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) provide new capabilities that have the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of the preparation (e.g. Simulation, planning domain) as well as the conduction of mission operations. Pervious studies performed on the topic of AR and VR technology have focused on the main aspects of the technology itself (maturity, tracking techniques, point cloud generations, etc.) And at its applicability to human space operations. The proposed activity will instead focus on the operational use case scenarios for a range of mission types, including traditional spacecraft operations, and analyse the specific technology aspects related to the integration of AR/VR into the mainstream operational data systems (simulator, mission control system, mission planning system). It will also address the issues related to performance (real-time processing) and security of operational data systems. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Analyse use case scenarios for adoption of AR/VR in two domains of operations;:1) preparation (mission planning, simulation, validation) - OFF LINE operations and2) conducting operations - ON LINE Operations;- Identify the best extension points in operational data systems for integration of AR/VR- Perform the technology assessment for integration- Carry out a performance analysis for the short listed technologies- Implement Proof of Concept prototypes for the trade-off analysis
