High energy density solid-state batteries based on Li metal anode
Objectives

To develop and characterise Li battery technology based on solid-state electrolyte and metal anode with energy density higher than 180 Wh/Kg

Description

Conventional lithium ion batteries use organic highly flammable liquid electrolytes increasing the risk of catastrophic failure due to thermal runaways. In addition, the use of carbon anode in Li-ion batteries limit the maximum energy density. Based on scientific results, it is believed that the use of solid state electrolytes will significantly improve the electrochemical and thermal stability range of the battery cells. That will eventually contribute to enhanced safety on board the satellite and also during spacecraft Assembly Integration and Testing (AIT).The specific energy can be improved by replacing the carbon based anode with a metal based anode.Space requirements, especially for material selection and safety testing, shall be taken into account in the early stages of the development of a technology combining the advantages of both solid state electrolytes and Li metal anode..This activity encompasses the following tasks :- Literature review on materials and processes- Chemical definition of the solid state electrolyte through lab cell testing- Experimental comparison with the conventional liquid based Li-ion electrochemical system- process definition to replace the carbon anode with lithium metal anode- performance characterisation and safety testing of the electrochemical cell based on the metal anode, solid electrolyte and conventional cathode
