Low Energy Wireless Imaging System
Objectives

This proposed activity is the first step of a development strategy for a new concept of low energy wireless camera breadboard for space.

Description

Using the heritage of the existing space-x micro-cameras used in missions such as SMART-1, Exomars, the activity aims at developing a new generation of low energy and low cost cameras for future ESA missions. Thanks to on-going technological developments, the mass of scientific imaging systems (in particular for space exploration) was already drastically reduced during the past few years. However, progress in micro-electronics will also allow a significant reduction in power consumption. Moreover, imaging systems often need several meters of cables connecting them to the main system electronics and power supply. In fact, the mass of cables is comparable to or at least represents a significant part of the mass of the instrument. Depending on the position of the instrument, making cables pass through various mechanisms and joints significantly increases the complexity of the system, thus adding mass and lowering reliability. The application of wireless RF technology might offer a solution to some of the problems. Therefore, during the course of this activity a breadboard demonstrator will be developed that shall take as much as possible benefit from the tremendous technology leaps in terrestrial technologies in the area of RF communication and microprocessors. The following tasks are envisaged:- System review analysis, specifications- Demonstrator Development focused on the wireless interface system- Development of a miniaturized breadboard using case studies.- Tests: Performances / Characterisation- Preliminary Environmental Tests which will include thermal and vibration.
