Preparation of enabling space technologies and building blocks: Additive Manufacturing for the Space Industry
Objectives
  • The main object of the project is to approach the technology to different Space actors by developing products based in AM technology.
  • Seven Spanish companies are addressed in order to develop seven different products and make them fly.
Description

Background and justification:

  • The use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies in the Space sector is gaining traction, although it is necessary to find new use cases and develop them up to TRL7 or TRL9 to be meaningful
  • The Spanish Space industry has important actors with high knowledge of their products and sector that could benefit from the experience CiTD and CATEC have in AM and improve their products through the use of these technologies

 Achievements and status:

  • Five different parts/products have been developed, reaching TRL 7-8.
  • One of these parts still could move to TRL9 and fly in MSR ERO mission - SENER Main bracket.
  • Interesting research has been made in the derisking activity of COMET interceptor with new shields concepts - DEIMOS
  • A new “serial” production of RF products is being developed thanks to the background given by the GSTP - ANTERAL
  • Process qualification for Ti6Al4V sHIP including postprocesses - LIDAX and SENER
  • Process qualification for ULTEM 9085 including postprocesses - SOLARMEMS

Benefits:

  • The benefit of using AM is generally focused on mass and cost reduction
  • Improved capabilities are also achieved
  • Lower lead times for EM models also justifies the use of the technology
