Solar System bodies – including the Moon and Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) – contain a rich diversity of materials such as metals and volatiles that could be used as energy sources and as means to sustain human life, as humankind ventures deeper into space. Space agencies worldwide are considering such resources as potential raw materials for space infrastructure development, based on recent technological advances related to space in-situ manufacturing.

The objective of the on hand study are, to assess the potential of using Star Trackers in ESA missions currently in operation, or planned in the future, to work as a "payload of opportunity" that can be used to carry out observations with scientific or engineering interest. In particular the activities looked to:

BEAST aims to modify the orbital period of the small secondary object of a binary asteroid by kinetic impact. BEAST analyses a commercial LEO platform accommodating as payload the impactor and GNC system with total mission cost below 150 M€.
The objective of the Cobra mission is to use a conventional chemical thruster to modify the orbit of a man-made object through plume impingement. The proposed concept uses a standard satellite platform with a modified payload to suit mission needs.

The objective of this study was to examine an initial concept and requirements for a Lunar and Asteroid Receiving Facility (LaARF). Then based on previous Mars Sample Receiving Facility (MSRF) studies determine an optimal ‘Scenario’ that will allow evolution from a facility dealing with Moon and asteroid returned sample material to a facility dealing with Mars returned sample material with potential biohazard.
