The study aims at investigating technical solutions to design a reliable TT&C system during superior solar conjunctions, to mitigate the detrimental effects of phase and amplitude scintillation, which limit the maneuvers under 5 deg of Sun- Earth-Probe (SEP) angle. After the analysis of data acquired during superior solar conjunctions of Mars Express (MEX) in 2013-2015 and Cassini in 2001-2002, that allowed deriving a mathematical model to be used in the simulations, the current ESA TT&C system has been evaluated, in terms of link performance.

The use of helicon sources as thrusters for space propulsion has been envisaged as a robust, scalable, reliable and long-life device. The Helicon Plasma Thruster (HPT) is presented as a potentially durable, throttlable and high thrust-to-power ratio device, with intermediate specific impulse and competitive thrust efficiency.

A study on Deep Space Navigation with Pulsars has been carried out in accordance with ESA Statement of Work Reference: TEC-ETN/2011.90, Issue 1, Revision 2. The UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL) was the prime contractor with University of Leicester (UL) as a sub-contractor.

The XNAV concept has been analysed in detail. The performances obtained from simulations have been validated successfully using real data from XMM-Newton space telescope.
The performances obtained using real data are not in line with the XNAV performances (100 m for the Crab pulsar) due to limitations in the XMM-Newton instrument operations. We have been forced to use a source much fainter than the Crab pulsar and surrounded by a background much stronger than expected.

The RC-SIM project is enclosed in the initiative of using more extensively the capability of the radio communication signals (telemetry and datalinks) of interplanetary probes for remote sensing the structure of planets and moons. In more detail, the objectives of this study are:
-Investigate the physical parameters that can be obtained from the use, as a remote sensing instrument, of the radio communication systems on-board interplanetary probes.
