Human exploratory missions to the Moon or Mars are widely considered as the next logical steps in human space exploration and, lately, settlement. Such space exploration or settlement activities involve humans spending long periods of time in space and, with increasing distance from Earth, no abort possibilities. Crews on such missions have to be self- sufficient, not only concerning food, drink and waste, but also with respect to medical treatment. Health issues are raised by the environmental conditions in space, such as the influence of altered gravity, radiation and isolation.
OHB System AG
The aim of this study was to assess how space travel modifies local sleep episodes in wakefulness during a visuo-motor task and weather this is related to performance. To this end, specific EEG (electroencephalogram) data previously recorded on board the ISS during the Neurospat experiment (AO-2004, 118) were used.
UNIVERSITE LIBRE DE...
The International Space Station (ISS) is slowly approaching the end of its mission. The European Space Agency (ESA) and its international partners are considering new mission targets for the future of human space exploration in the post-ISS era. Highest ranked on the list of potential targets are a return to the Moon, Near-Earth Objects or asteroids, the moons of Mars (Phobos, Deimos) and, as the ultimate target, the surface of Mars.
COMEX SA
The CubISSat study investigates the feasibility of operating a multi-purpose small satellite in the International Space Station (ISS) environment whose aim is to provide the ground and flight crew with effective tools to cope with a variety of situations, potentially avoiding to rely on complex robotics and extravehicular activities as currently conceived.
TYVAK INTERNATIONAL S.R....
The radiation environment in space has severely adverse effects on humans, electronics and materials. The most challenging part of the environment for our understanding of the effects are the highly charged highly energetic (HZE) particles. This study looks at the possibilities FAIR offers for space radiation research. There are two main parts: first the open issues and needed research in space radiation involving heavy ions of high energy and second the requirements a facility for this research should meet checked against the possibilities at FAIR.
Fraunhofer Gesellschaft
The objective of the project was to define, design and validate data mining algorithms that enable advanced or autonomous medical monitoring and diagnostics for astronauts, exploiting standard medical data available from health and sanitary structures.
SATE
The main objective of the Aptitude and Performance Testing (APT) project was to develop an effective and efficient aptitude test battery for manual docking and robotics skills. An aptitude test battery with a high predictive value for future ATP skills that requires little resources would increase the effectiveness of ESA's training.
NLR
The objectives of the BIOSIS study funded by the General Studies Programme of ESA were: to review the biological risks for the crew due to biocontamination related to air and water quality, to identify knowledge gaps of non-detected / non-mitigated risks and to provide recommendations for future development of automated instrumentation.
MEDES
Within VASCO the formal verification methodology (FVM) for advanced human- automation interaction in safety critical environments based on models of the overall human-automation interaction (HAI) system has been developed.
The main objectives for this work are summarized below:
- Approach human-automation interaction from a holistic cooperative system
