The technical objective of this study was to understand the net effect of using deorbiting technologies like sails or tethers over the future debris population around Earth. In principle, indeed, these attractive technologies will support the compliancy to post-mitigation disposal guidelines, for small missions. However, the increased cross section also increases the collision risk.

We study a low-cost interplanetary mission to demonstrate the capability of artificially modifying the orbit of a small (250 ton) binary asteroid body. The targeting spacecraft survives the slow (~1 m/s) impact to carry out the orbit modification measurement afterwards.

Non-cooperative bistatic SAR missions such as SAOCOM-CS promise to greatly enhance the science return of existing missions at a low cost.
In this study, we addressed major technological challenges associated with the implementation of such missions, such as phase calibration and tomographic focusing.
