Along 20 years of life sciences research in space, several full size microscopes were developed (phase contrast, fluorescence analysis, and recently the Advanced Light Microscope from NASA) to be used on board the ISS. However, such bulky systems appeared to prevent a versatile use and limit the potential of experiments that can be performed today on ground. In particular, none of them can be accommodated on an on board centrifuge to perform experiments in microgravity and at various G level. And for most of them, the samples are fixed on a glass slide and allow only static analyses.
ABOA SPACE RESEARCH OY...
The project entitled "System analysis of deployable components for micro landers in low gravity environment" is conducted within the framework of the ESA contract no. 4000117150/16/NL/HK/hh. Its goal is to perform an analysis and trade-off between the various design options for antennas and solar array deployment mechanisms (including a comparison between the fixed and deployable configurations) of the MASCOT-2 lander in the micro-gravity environment of Didymoon.

Cryogenic instruments based on imaging arrays of superconducting Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors operating at very-low temperature are proposed for future high- and low-energy astrophysics space missions, including the X-IFU instrument for Athena and the SAFARI instrument for SPICA. 2-D arrays of 1000's of TES detectors at 50 mK enable high-sensitivity imaging with high optical efficiency and fast response.
