Telemetry data is the most valuable asset provided by any spacecraft. Increasing the data amount sent from space to ground increases a mission’s value, but often this comes with increased costs. Compression of Space generated data provides great benefits to both the large ESA missions by increasing the mission science throughput and small missions (which typically have low bandwidth) by increasing the traditional low downlink rates of these missions. One solution to this problem is the POCKET+ lossless compression algorithm, which is currently being standardized by CCSDS.
VisionSpace Technologies
The “SaaSy ML” idea will provide experimenters with on-board Machine Learning (ML) functionalities that any app can subscribe to via a Software as a Service (SaaS) app hosted on the Satellite Experimental Processing Platform (SEPP). The ML features provided by the SaaS app will cover both training and prediction operations. The JSAT open-source java library for ML will be re-used thus making accessible over 100 training algorithms on-board a flying mission. Re-using the JSAT library will ensure the development to focus on the idea's novel aspect: a spacecraft SaaS app for in-orbit ML.
VISIONSPACE TECHNOLOGIES...
Many use-cases for insight generated in orbit require the integration and calibration of raw data from multiple instruments and vantage-points - a future vision sometimes referred to as ‘hybrid observation’. Such a capability would be a foundational requirement in the processing chain for rapid follow-up observations especially when we need to estimate quantitative variables (e.g. soil moisture or water pollutants).
Trillium Technologies
‘STARCOP’ is an initiative to use ML and multiple satellites of diverse detection capabilities to quickly detect methane leaks onboard and notify them in near-real-time. In this project we have developed ML models for automatic detection of methane in hyperspectral and multispectral imagery. Our hyperspectral model (HyperSTARCOP) is able to capture more than 90% of plumes in our test data while reducing the false positive rate by 39% when compared to state-of-the-art models.

The ISRU-DM mission aims to perform the first demonstration of ISRU on the Moon, via the production of water or oxygen from raw lunar material (i.e. regolith, ice etc.) At Agency-level a phase-0 level study was also performed to understand the technical and programmatic feasibility of undertaking the ISRU-DM mission via the provision of commercial services from industry.

There is a need to achieve optimal cost effectiveness from remote sensing missions. Concurrently, a key scientific need in remote sensing is to address the spatial and temporal resolution of atmospheric measurements. Improved temporal resolution observations of the atmosphere – and importantly a reduced latency between observation and delivery to the user – can directly improve weather forecasting services.

The overall rationale for such a study has been driven by two factors. Firstly the unexpected on-orbit failure of the Envisat mission in 2012, has now created a specific and immediate ‘debris problem’ for ESA. Secondly, the number of and density of damaging space debris in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is predicted to rise in the future, which has the potential to negatively constrain future space operations for all operators and users.
