Model based approaches have proved to be efficient in supporting engineering activities, models replacing traditional document-based approaches. Nevertheless even in most advanced deployments, a lot of engineering artifacts are textual either because the return on investment of introducing models is too low on this particular case or because the information is more efficiently expressed in natural language even if consistency and correctness issues appears.
Thales Alenia Space
- Enforce the use of the physical engineering model that TAS-F already has by sub-system architects in order to have the model as a central source of truth
- Produce an interactive representation of the model allowing its consultation without having to install dedicated modelling tools
- Produce trend graphs on system budgets
- Produce document generation capability to export graphs and tables to the system and subsystem budget reports
Thales Alenia Space
The objective of this activity is to assess the system level and design impacts of optimising a satellite design for on-orbit manufacturing and assembly, as well as preparing it to be refurbished, reused or recycled on orbit afterwards, and to identify the technologies needed.

The objective of this study was to help define how to maintain and further develop European access to the surface of Mars, the major destination for European exploration, following the most recent approved and developed (or currently in development) missions (ExoMars 2016, ExoMars RSP).
Thales Alenia Space
The focus of this study was the system-level assessment of potential small mission architectures that could operate at Mars in the 2030s, after or potentially in parallel with MSR mission.
In particular two cases were evaluated:
- Mission 1: Mars Communications Constellation (MCC), for supporting assets on the surface and providing science
- Mission 2: Mars Science Orbiter (MSO), a science-driven mission, remote sensing

The study takes place in the context of the space environment remediation. Tackling the issue of space debris is becoming more and more critical as it becomes more dangerous for existing and future space missions. Solutions must be found to ensure the security of space missions security and a clean space environment. Laser pressure solutions are considered promising as they only using momentum transfer to perform debris manoeuvres to avoid collisions. This means that no additional debris is generated using this technique.

Increasingly demanding space-based applications require a large primary mirror diameter, on which the optical instrument resolution depends. However, the mass and volume of a monolithic primary mirror would dramatically increase along with its size, which, in addition to cost and technical issues, is also limited by the available volumen in the launch vehicle fairing.

Present ESA R&T study aimed to achieve following objectives:
To anticipate security needs & requirements for future space missions (earth observation, communication, navigation, science & exploration, etc.) with respect to architectures considered for future missions.
To build an advanced security architecture portfolio embedding state-of-art security concepts, technics, technologies, components and solutions

Solar System bodies – including the Moon and Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) – contain a rich diversity of materials such as metals and volatiles that could be used as energy sources and as means to sustain human life, as humankind ventures deeper into space. Space agencies worldwide are considering such resources as potential raw materials for space infrastructure development, based on recent technological advances related to space in-situ manufacturing.

Resulting from an ever increasing public pressure, the quest to be environmentally friendly is transforming the competitive landscape, as eco-friendly design turns into a new frontier of innovation. As a public sector intergovernmental organisation, ESA is committed to prioritizing environmental concerns in all its activities. Through its Clean Space initiative, it is pioneering an eco-friendly approach to space activities.
