The objective of this activity was to develop a novel type of X-ray detector that combines two of the most important detector parameters: a large active area and a good energy resolution. This new 'GDD' detector is of gas-filled type, but its internal structure is similar to the widely-used Silicon Drift Detector.

The aim of the project “Strategy and Recommendations for microbiological cleanliness of future cargo integration” was to review current measures implemented to ensure the microbiological cleanliness of cargos and recommendations how to enhance the microbiological cleanliness. The lessons learned from the ATV campaigns and the current cargo processes were summarized based on interviews with representatives of all the steps of the cargo process.

This report concisely describes the findings of the study Finnish technological capacities with regard to ESA opportunities. An analysis of the past and current space technology activities in Finland has been performed to identify structural weaknesses and strengths. Furthermore, a study has been made of the current technology developments in Finland that have led to a list of potential new space technology products that could contribute to the ESA mandatory programmes. Finally, a list of recommendations to improve the Finnish participation to the ESA programmes has been produced.

In the first demonstrations, the detection of photons with graphene was based on the pn-junction generated by the graphene-metal contact. There the active detector area is a narrow line with length determined by the contact edge and as the absorption of photons incident to a single layer of graphene is 2.3 % at highest, the detector efficiency is rather modest. However, the detector has very high speed, demonstrated up to 40 GHz and predicted to reach over 500 GHz, possibly limited only by the contact resistance.

Ambient space plasma can induce electrostatic noise in a linear antenna onboard a spacecraft. The resulting quasi-thermal noise (QTN) intensity spectrum as a function of frequency depends on the plasma parameters. The phenomenon can be utilised for inferring the plasma parameters if one measures the induced noise by a sensitive radio receiver. This is called QTN spectroscopy and it has been demonstrated and validated in several space missions that the technique is able to uncover the correct plasma parameters.

The main goals of the DPEM project was [RD1] "to set the foundations for the development of a comprehensive suite of near surface dusty plasma environment models applicable in particular (but not only) to airless bodies of interest for future exploration missions such as asteroids, the Moon, Phobos and Deimos, etc … These models shall allow the definition of charged dust environment specifications to assess the effects of dusty plasmas on near surface or surface exploration units (spacecraft, payload, lander, astronaut) in a surface-spacecraft-dust environment system."
