Future missions are currently being proposed / designed with existing (or moderately inproved) Space-to-Earth communication capabilities in mind. Optical communications technology offers the potential of a dramatic increase in data-rates, specifically in the down-link of science data, thereby allowing for a substantial increase in science return.Direct detection technology using pulse position modulation (PPM) is regarded as the preferred solution for "deep space" optical links.

In recent years, surface-penetrating radars have formed a part of several ESA missions in both monostatic and bi-static configurations. Such radars can be found, for instance, on board Mars Express where, using MARSIS, the Martian sub-surface is sensed, as well as on board Rosetta where CONSERT was used to probe the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

This purpose of the study was to develop a high frequency radar to sound the first tens of metres of asteroid regolith and to achieve 3D tomography with metric resolution in order to
- Determine its structure and layering
- Identify geomorphological elements (rocks, boulders, etc.) embedded in the sub surface
- Map the spatial variation its texture
- Derive an estimate of dielectric permittivity of the sub-surface material

The purpose of this GSP activity was to assess the capabilities of non-intrusive diagnostic techniques for internal measurements in ablative materials during PWT tests. This initial steps were to identify the measurements to be performed in relation with high-speed Earth re-entry, and to identify the accessible parameters as well as related diagnostics techniques. For this objective an extensive review of the possible measurement methods, with a focus on non-intrusive diagnostics, has been undertaken.

This report reviews the recently completed and current work programs on various aspects of hypersonic aerodynamics research conducted in European research organisations. Four main fields are covered: configuration aerodynamics, propulsion aerodynamics, rarefied flows and associated non-equilibrium effects, and real gas effects. In each field, a brief description or comment appears on each job, together with references to published papers, a job index and an address for each contributor.
