Optical Feeder-link for next generation telecommunication satellites

The use of optical (laser) feeder-links for next generation telecommunication satellites is receiving strong interest from commercial telecommunication providers because it will soon not be possible to support the projected growth in bandwidth using radio frequency bands (e.g. Ka-band). Moving to higher radio frequencies such as the Q/V or W-bands does not dramatically improve available bandwidth, while it increases atmospheric attenuation to a level comparable with the laser communication bands. Radio climatology models of the ionosphere: status and way forward

The objective of this study was to use experimental observations of the ionosphere collected in the past years to assess the performance of climatological ionosphere models, with the focus on scintillation models. This analysis has been performed in order to evaluate the ability of these climatological models to properly support ESA's future needs, to identify weak areas, to propose recommendations for improvements and to implement these improvements whenever possible in existing models.

Dusty Plasma Environments: Near-Surface Characterisation and Modelling

The NEMS – Near-Earth Exploration Minimum System internal ESA study, conducted at ESA's Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) between March and April 2011 aimed at investigating and reporting on the main trade-offs, system drivers and critical risk areas associated with even the most basic human exploration beyond Earth-Moon system. The (purely theoretical) mission scenario addressed the transfer a crew of 3 astronauts from the Earth to an accessible Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) and their safe return to Earth before 2030. Dust contamination was identified as a major concern.
