We report on a new test of the gravitational redshift and thus of local position invariance, an integral part of the Einstein equivalence principle, which is the foundation of general relativity and all metric theories of gravitation. We use data spanning 1008 days from two satellites of Galileo, Europe’s global satellite navigation system (GNSS), which were launched in 2014, but accidentally delivered into elliptic rather than circular orbits. The resulting modulation of the gravitational redshift of the onboard atomic clocks allows the determination of redshift with high accuracy.

The reception performances of the Deep Space Ground Stations is limited by the noise generated in the front end. Any reduction of this noise will allow to increase the data transmitted or to reduce the required mass and power on the spacecraft transmitter.X band is presently used for the telemetry of all deep space missions and will still be the preferred frequency band for future Mars exploration missions. The existing feed and LNA systems have been designed separately. Therefore, the feed system is operated at room temperature while the LNA is operated at 12 K.

The International Space Station (ISS) is slowly approaching the end of its mission. The European Space Agency (ESA) and its international partners are considering new mission targets for the future of human space exploration in the post-ISS era. Highest ranked on the list of potential targets are a return to the Moon, Near-Earth Objects or asteroids, the moons of Mars (Phobos, Deimos) and, as the ultimate target, the surface of Mars.

Previous research has already demonstrated that graphene field effect transistors can be operated at incredibly high bandwidths, demonstrating 25+GHz with a theoretical limit of up to 500GHz for visible photodetection. Ultrafast photodetection has also been demonstrated on the 10s of femtosecond scale via the photothermoelectric effect for visible photodetection.

While the MEOSAR is moving to FOC with Galileo satellites that are equipped with SAR transparent payloads, ESA is already investigating its future Galileo-2 (G2G) system for new features. In this framework, one of the aims of the ESA study on Future Concepts for Galileo Search And Rescue was to define a preliminary design of a new SAR payload capable of processing both First Generation Beacon (FGB) and future Second Generation Beacon (SGB) signals.

Funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) through its General Studies Programme (GSP) (www.esa.int/gsp), this activity aimed to provide more insights on the possible space applications of micro- and nanoencapsulation (MNE) techniques and technologies. NASA performed some early studies3,4 in the international space station (ISS) with aim to assess whether new drugs could be produced under a microgravity environment. However, the study of MNE in the space context remained primarily limited to these few experiments.

In this report, we describe the advisory study for both the Asteroid Impact Monitoring (AIM) as a stand-alone European mission and for AIM with its second component, the US Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission under study at NASA by the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
Observatoire de la Côte...
This purpose of the study was to develop a high frequency radar to sound the first tens of metres of asteroid regolith and to achieve 3D tomography with metric resolution in order to
- Determine its structure and layering
- Identify geomorphological elements (rocks, boulders, etc.) embedded in the sub surface
- Map the spatial variation its texture
- Derive an estimate of dielectric permittivity of the sub-surface material
