This work has primarily focused on establishing scenarios where inflatable devices could be the most useful. Given that these missions rely on aerodynamic drag that results in (potentially significant) heating, the authors have sought to find solutions to minimize heat fluxes acting on the device surface, and especially keeping it within the limits of flexible/foldable TPS materials for the aerocapture scenario.

Marine litter causes enormous damage to ecosystems and has become a concern for human health, since plastic has been found entering the food chain.
To try to solve this, research and industrial communities are now working on systems for detecting and/or capturing marine litter debris. Satellite-based detection approaches, in particular, are still in the early stage of their development and need to be validated with ground truth data and observations.

The technical activities covered in this project allowed the creation of several numerical tools that can predict the thermoelectric/thermomagnetic response to different thermal loading conditions, material properties (thermal and electrical) and geometrical configurations.
Several numerical studies were performed using both commercial and dedicated numerical analysis procedures for the assessment of the thermoelectric behaviour of simple geometries under specific thermal loading conditions.

The lack of information on land cover monitoring has a huge impact on the water resources management, since it may hamper the collection, treatment and distribution of water for human consumption and agricultural development. The objective of the study was twofold: i) to analyse the new dynamics of desertification in Southern African region (southern Mozambique, southern Zimbabwe and Northern South Africa) through main achievements of the DesertWatch-Extension; ii) to propose new methods for integration of EO data with different spatial and spectral resolutions, namely the new ESA Proba-V mission, and new field data, in particular, the map of risks on natural disasters in Mozambique.

Over the course of this study we have convinced ourselves of the benefits of a reference architecture in particular and of an end-to-end simulator in general. Our arguments have mostly been technical ones, but the reality is that it can only be sold to the space science community by successfully making the case that it improves the science return of the mission.

GNSSBICS is a feasibility study carried out in the frame of the ESA’s General Studies Programme (GSP)
by DEIMOS-Space, Deimos-Engenharia and ESA.
This activity investigated what G/S infrastructure would be necessary to develop a System, named as GNSS-BICS (GNSS Bias Calibration System), in charge of providing, under demand, the GNSS MEO S/C SISBAF (Signal-In-Space Biases Amongst Frequencies), from GNSS observations gathered by GNSS multi-frequency receivers on-board LEO satellites (potentially from different missions).

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are already used in space missions (e.g. GOCE, Swarm, Sentinel, and MetOp, among others), not only as a navigation sensor (either for autonomous orbit and attitude determination or for relative navigation) but also as a science instrument (e.g. for altimetry, global geodesy, Radio Occultation and GNSS Reflectometry applications). However, its use is usually limited to orbits or mission phases below the orbits of GNSS satellites, since GNSS satellite antennas transmit mainly in the Earth's direction.
