The project is aimed at investigating and assessing methods for the certification of the design and development of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems for autonomous space missions.
The general objectives of the project are:
• To improve the certification processes (verification, validation, and assurance activities) of safety GNC critical space systems with the goal to reduce the cost, manpower and time for certification.
• To perform research on alternative approaches to reliability and certification to the current practices.

The main goals of the GARCA project are:
(1) To develop a tool capable to simulate GNSS-R data products for various instrument implementations using state-of-the-art techniques, including GEROS phase-A candidates, up to Level-1 observables and Level-2 geophysical data products, which will be freely and easily accessible to the interdisciplinary scientific GEROS community.
(2) To study the compliance of different GEROS implementations with respect to the Mission Requirements, and study the optimization of its geophysical data products.

Global plans for exploratory missions aim at extending the distances travelled by humans well beyond low Earth orbit and establishing permanent bases on the surface of Moon and Mars [1]. This will inevitably lead to increasing mission duration, radiation intensity, gravity levels and degree of confinement and isolation to which the crews will be exposed. In this extended space mission context, the astronauts should have the means to collect medical/physiological data in order to understand if their physiological conditions are in nominal levels.

Space debris mitigation requirements specific to propulsion systems are scrutinized and compliance of OHB reference propulsion architectures is assessed. The risk of generating debris due to a failure in a propulsion system is assessed with a focus on the specific risk of a hypervelocity impact on a propulsion tank containing residuals.
The engineering activities, delta-qualifications or hardware development which can support the recommended propulsion passivation strategies are presented and prioritized.

The MASCOT (Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout) lander onboard JAXA's Hayabusa 2 sample return mission to C-type Near Earth asteroid Ryugu is a lightweight (~ 10 kg) and compact (0.3 x 0.3 x 0.2 m3 ) landing platform with the capability to carry various in-situ experiments with a total mass of up to ~3 kg. Thus a system to payload mass ratio of 7:3 can be achieved.

Microparticles are one of the most unknown components of the space environment. Their observation and investigation is complicated by their small size and their high velocity. When impacting on a spacecraft surface, a plasma cloud is generated by shock wave and surface ionization processes. This transient cloud of vaporized and ionized particle and surface material, referred to as impact plasma, rapidly expands to the meter scale within microseconds, thereby interacting with spacecraft surface components.

The overall objective of this study is to assess constellations of two pairs of satellites for the retrieval of time-variable gravity field information for best quality scientific monitoring of mass distribution and transport in the Earth system. Before embarking on this study the geodetic community and space agencies have come to realize that weaknesses in current single-pair gravimetric satellite missions such as GRACE or GRACE-FO (to be launched in 2017) would significantly be alleviated by having a second GRACE-type pair in space simultaneously.

The approach of the ‘Interplanetary Meteoroid Environment for eXploration’ (IMEX) project is to build a model of meteoroid streams throughout the inner solar system. Our motivation for this model is the impact hazard to spacecraft. An understanding of the interplanetary environment, including the dust environment, is crucial for the planning of spacecraft missions in the inner solar system. Particles striking a spacecraft with high velocities can cause damage leading to the impairment or even failure of the spacecraft or its subsystems.
