The driver behind the MoBaTe activity was to propose ways to improve the current software development and validation lifecycle using MBSE techniques to shift some of the system validation activities to the early stages of development. The roadmap to achieve this included identifying strategies, required model properties, modelling tools and languages needed to move from a requirements-based approach to a model-based approach. All this considering existing and established workflows and tools currently used by ESA.

The D2OPS activity started with the goal of applying MBSE practices to enable digital continuity between design and operations. This study involves the following main activities:

The Integrated MBSE Analytics Platform (IMAP) has been developed in the course of the OSIP [OSIP] MBSE campaign’s MBSE2DataLake project. It demonstrates how MBSE data can be downstreamed from early phases and integrated with Telemetry data or system operations data. Applying MachineLearning analytics and customized visualization on these sets of integrated data provides seamless analysis capabilities and data browsing experience for the user. The approach leads to linking the former separated domains of System Design and AIT/Operations.

The MBSE and Space to Ground ICD activity started with the goal of applying MBSE practices to the preparation of the Space to Ground ICD (S2GICD). This study involves the following main steps:
VISIONSPACE TECHNOLOGIES...
Space system engineering is a complex activity, spanning multiple phases and involving different stakeholders using a variety of engineering approaches and tools. ESA has been investing in Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) research for many years, developing different MBSE frameworks and Domain Specific Tools (DSTs). Recently, a broader need has been recognized to focus the MBSE efforts on semantic interoperability and associated model integration.

The main objective of the project is the reverse engineering of the OPS-SAT system, creating a model of the existing system design. The model aims to be built in a way that it is most useful for OPS-SAT engineers to understand and discuss the existing design and use this as a basis for further development of the OPS-SAT system.
OHB System AG
ESA has traditionally specified space systems using a document-based approach, and is now in a transition process towards the digitalisation of systems engineering activities. At the same time, space industry companies have their own internal set of best practices and experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
To solve this problem, ESA initiated this study led by CGI in partnership with OHB to identify a way to harmonise the different MBSE approaches from industry and compile the information into a concise book.
