    Radiation shielding mainly depends on particles species and energies: a multi- layered shielding approach could therefore be seen as the most effective shielding at the lowest mass. In previous studies, it was observed that a potential gain of 40% to 50% in shielding effectiveness with respect to Aluminum shielding (at equivalent mass) could be achieved with materials like Tantalum, Polyethylene- Tantalum, Polyethylene-Tungsten and Kapton-Tungsten.

      Application of the FAIR facility to space radiation research

      The radiation environment in space has severely adverse effects on humans, electronics and materials. The most challenging part of the environment for our understanding of the effects are the highly charged highly energetic (HZE) particles. This study looks at the possibilities FAIR offers for space radiation research. There are two main parts: first the open issues and needed research in space radiation involving heavy ions of high energy and second the requirements a facility for this research should meet checked against the possibilities at FAIR.

      GNSS-R – Assessment of Requirements and Consolidation of Retrieval Algorithms (GARCA)

      The main goals of the GARCA project are:

      (1) To develop a tool capable to simulate GNSS-R data products for various instrument implementations using state-of-the-art techniques, including GEROS phase-A candidates, up to Level-1 observables and Level-2 geophysical data products, which will be freely and easily accessible to the interdisciplinary scientific GEROS community.

      (2) To study the compliance of different GEROS implementations with respect to the Mission Requirements, and study the optimization of its geophysical data products.
