The PERSEO project (PErsonal Radiation Shielding for intErplaetary missiOns) aimed at
studying a wearable innovative radiation protection system to mitigate the effects of
Solar Particle Events (SPE) on astronauts. SPE can be considered as related mainly to
deterministic effects of the cosmic radiation, with hazards to man arising for physical
doses above 2 Gy, when symptoms of the hematopoietic syndrome appear.

The Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) region, home of the operational Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) GPS and Glonass, is becoming more and more exploited with the advent of the European Galileo and the Chinese Beidou constellations, both in their build-up phase. The sensitive applications of the navigation satellites and the absence of any natural sink mechanism, such as the atmospheric drag, call for a careful debris prevention policy able to preserve the MEO environment, avoiding in the future the problems now already faced by the LEO and the Geostationary Orbit (GEO) environments.

The awareness of the risk of uncontrolled accumulation of man-‐made objects became significant in the late 70's and since then, a number of space debris mitigation guidelines have been published by various organizations. The general aim is to reduce the growth of space debris by ensuring that space systems are designed, operated, and disposed in a manner that prevents them from generating debris throughout their lifetime, assuring the sustainable space utilization.

This document describes the activities and the findings performed in the frame of the ODET-μ (Optical DETection in Microfluidics) project by Kayser Italia, a SME enterprise.
In this project, technologies for the integration of optical components were reviewed to define the “state of the art” in the field of integrated optics for detection on Lab On a Chip devices (LoCs).
LoCs are microfluidics based systems aiming at the miniaturization onto a single substrate (chip) of several functionalities that typically would require an entire biological laboratory.
