In-cloud image processing used for civil protection and employed by World Bank.
An in-cloud image processing software built by a GSTP Element 1 activity with Italy has already been employed by the World Bank. Currently, the tools available on the market to view, edit and process Earth Observation images are mostly desktop-based. But, as high performance computing progresses, there is more and more need for Earth Observation image processing to be moved onto the cloud, to minimise data transfer.
Fondazione ACROTEC
A recent activity with GSTP Element 2 and Italy, has taken their most up-to-date and lowest cost solar cell and qualified it for use in space missions.

At present, the largest part of the catalogued space debris population consists of fragments originating from accidental explosions of spacecraft and upper stages, but it is expected that hypervelocity collisions involving large objects could become the primary source of new debris in the mid-term future. In this context, understanding the physical processes involved in spacecraft collisions is crucial, because these big impacts are one of the key drivers of the long-term evolution of the amount of space debris.

GALIST is a project that supports the traceability of food products linked to their position and the occurrence of significant events (e.g. labelling, packaging, shipping). The system is based on an innovative concept that uses GNSS combined with ADSB data, which is provided by airplanes. The GALIST project uses, in fact, a double-certification approach – based on a proprietary algorithm – to keep track of products.

This activity presents a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) simulator designed to assess the performance of bi-static SAR missions. It is a modular software able to simulate realistic SAR data (including injection of the system non-idealities), to estimate the SAR performance at radiometric and interferometric level. In order to ensure accurate measures of the bi-static performance, it simulates raw data exploiting a time-domain approach, without assumptions on the acquisition geometry. This feature makes the simulator a useful tool for the design of new SAR missions concepts.

Shannon-Nyquist theorem rules the signal sampling stating that the signal must be sampled at a rate of at least twice the maximum frequency present in the signal to be fully reconstructed. Compressive Sensing (CS) theory affirms that a sparse signal can be efficiently reconstructed by the acquisition of a number of samples far below the minimal one dictated by Nyquist theorem, thus providing a new approach to data acquisition. CS technique is based on the concept of sparsity. The information rate of a continuous 'sparse' signal may be much smaller than suggested by its bandwidth.

The Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) is a candidate ESA mission to the binary Near-Earth Asteroid (65803) Didymos. While its main objective is to demonstrate new technologies for future deep-space missions, AIM will also characterise for the first time a binary asteroid system, providing an understanding of its formation and of the origin of the Solar System.

BIOMASS is a polarimetric P-band (435 MHz) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in a dawn-dusk low Earth orbit. Its principal objective is to measure biomass content and biomass change in all the Earth’s forests. The launch of BIOMASS is envisaged for around 2020, with the mission expected to last around five years.

The Biomass satellite is a polarimetric P-band (435 MHz) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in a dawn-dusk low-Earth orbit. Its principal objective is to measure biomass content and biomass change in all of Earth’s forests. The mission launch is envisaged around 2024, for a duration of five years.

This study aims to investigate a feasible regional TEC temporal fluctuations product derived from ground-based monitoring stations Western Sub Saharan African region. To assess how the existing ionospheric monitoring capabilities in that region can satisfy related requirements, for a selected science application and for Biomass external calibration.
