There is a need to achieve optimal cost effectiveness from remote sensing missions. Concurrently, a key scientific need in remote sensing is to address the spatial and temporal resolution of atmospheric measurements. Improved temporal resolution observations of the atmosphere – and importantly a reduced latency between observation and delivery to the user – can directly improve weather forecasting services.

RAMS and risk assessments performed in the course of the system design, verification and operation of space systems rely on the availability of realistic input data. This input data is coming mainly from three different sources:
- MIL-HDBK-217F, Notice 2 for EEE components
- manufacturer supplied information (e.g. pyrovalves, reaction wheels)
- expert judgement based on experience and on the adaptation of data from space and non-space applications.

Thousands of man-made objects are currently in orbit around the Earth. These range from active satellites to flecks of paint, via spent rocket stages and fragments of satellite debris. Due to the drag of the very thin high altitude atmosphere, these objects have slowly decaying orbits, and will eventually re-enter the Earth's thicker, lower atmosphere. Most will be destroyed on entry due to the aerothermal heating experienced at hypersonic velocities at altitudes between 40 and 80km. However, some objects reach the ground.

The BOUNCED project has assessed the behaviour of elastic tethers within flexible link Active Debris Removal (ADR) systems. This has been achieved by solving a multidimensional set of linear equations, through the separation of dynamic modes; and the construction of analytic and numeric models of the resulting system. These models can be used to simulate the behaviour of both single and multi material tethers across the full lifetime of a tether mission, from pretension, through re-entry burn and free body motion post burn, to re-entry.

Ocean Surface Current is one of the most important ocean properties for oceanographers and operators in the maritime domain. Improved monitoring of ocean currents is systematically the number one requirement that emerges from any science or end user requirement surveys. Wavemill is a novel hybrid interferometric SAR system first proposed by ESA/ESTEC [Buck, 2005]. It offers the possibility of generating two-dimensional wide swath, high resolution, high precision maps of surface current vectors and ocean topography [Buck et al., 2009].

This summary presents the work by the University of Strathclyde, SCISYS and Roke Manor Research in response to the ESA SysNova Challenge AO7891; Remote sensing with cooperative nanosats, Challenge #3 – Weather. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance and cost of multi-agent satellite networks capable of providing data in support of severe weather monitoring.

In recent years the need for accessing historical Earth Observation data information has greatly increased, driven by long term scientific and environmental monitoring. The need to preserve such data indefinitely has led to the establishment of the Long-Term Data Preservation (LTDP) guidelines for Earth Observation. However to make full use of this data, it is necessary to have sufficient quality information available to be assured about the data quality.

Libration Point Orbits (LPO) and Highly Elliptical Orbits (HEO) are often selected for astrophysics and solar terrestrial missions as they offer vantage points for the observation of the Earth, the Sun and the Universe. No guidelines currently exist for LPO and HEO missions' end-of-life; however, as current and future missions are planned to be placed on these orbits, it is a critical aspect to define a sustainable strategy for their disposal, with the objective to avoid interference with protected regions.
