Quantum algorithms process information stored in qubits, the basic memory unit of quantum processors, and quantum operations (called gates) are the building blocks of quantum algorithms. In order to be run on quantum computing hardware, quantum algorithms must be compiled into a set of elementary machine instructions (i.e., quantum gates).

Heating samples to extract volatiles is a standard way to characterise solid samples. By heating a sample and recording the temperature profile results it can explain a lot about the nature of those volatiles and allow them to be collected and analysed further. This technique is, in principle, a standard process in terrestrial laboratories and the same principle is applied in-situ for planetary analysis where solid samples are delivered to an oven, which is sealed and heated to produce signatures of the volatiles.

The design of a re-entry vehicle and the analysis of its performance are extremely challenging tasks. The difficulties increase when the understanding of its transient behaviour is sought and grow even further if this transient is affected by uncontrolled phenomena such as the shape change caused by the ablation of the thermal protection material used as heat shield.

MARINE LITTER AGGREGATION FORECAST presents a new estimation of long-term global distribution of marine litter proceeding from land-based and from sea-based sources at global scale, taking advantage of numerical reanalysis databases of historical met-ocean conditions.

This work has primarily focused on establishing scenarios where inflatable devices could be the most useful. Given that these missions rely on aerodynamic drag that results in (potentially significant) heating, the authors have sought to find solutions to minimize heat fluxes acting on the device surface, and especially keeping it within the limits of flexible/foldable TPS materials for the aerocapture scenario.

SMARTIE (Smart Resource Management based on Internet of Things to support Off-Earth Manufacturing of Lunar Infrastructures) is an ESA study to assess the requirements, architecture, hardware and software needs and costs for implementation of an Internet of Manufacturing Things (IoMT) for a lunar human base and associated infrastructure.

The main objective of the OMAR Mission Architecture study is to identify and trade-off different mission architectures, to provide different services on-orbit. For each of the relevant scenarios, this objective shall be achieved by defining the associated system functional analysis and by trading-off different architectures and concepts of operations. Furthermore, the impact of aspects such as: operational orbit, type of serviced satellites, services provided, different levels of autonomy, and any other relevant factors is to be assessed.

Germanium (Ge) has been identified as one of the major environmental hotspots of ESA’s space missions. As one of the critical raw materials the use of it (mainly driven by solar cells) is a major contributor to mineral resource depletion.
Today, Germanium is used as a growth template for certain solar cells. While the thickness of the Germanium on a solar cell level is extremely thin, around 140μm, actually only 10-20μm are actively being used. The rest is structural.

Solid state optical refrigeration is the only active cryocooling technique that is truly vribration free, due to absence of moving parts and mass transport, with significant potential for use in future space missions. However, the overall wallplug efficiency is still relatively low in current approaches. One alternative approach investigated here is using a solar pumped laser (SPL) to drive the optical cryocooling process. This approach could offer higher efficiency by eliminates two conversion losses.

The aim of the LIFELINE project was to perform a feasibility study of a Relativistic Positioning System. Nowadays, all GNSS in operation are based on Newtonian physics and rely on global reference frames fixed to Earth. Relativistic effects are treated as deviations that need to be corrected. A practical RPS would consist, for example, in a constellation of satellites, each one broadcasting not only its General Relativity coordinates (proper times or other observables) at emission but also the coordinates that it receives from the other satellites.
