MiCoFCI study - Strategy and Recommendations for microbiological cleanliness of future cargo integration

The aim of the project “Strategy and Recommendations for microbiological cleanliness of future cargo integration” was to review current measures implemented to ensure the microbiological cleanliness of cargos and recommendations how to enhance the microbiological cleanliness. The lessons learned from the ATV campaigns and the current cargo processes were summarized based on interviews with representatives of all the steps of the cargo process.

Application of the FAIR facility to space radiation research

The radiation environment in space has severely adverse effects on humans, electronics and materials. The most challenging part of the environment for our understanding of the effects are the highly charged highly energetic (HZE) particles. This study looks at the possibilities FAIR offers for space radiation research. There are two main parts: first the open issues and needed research in space radiation involving heavy ions of high energy and second the requirements a facility for this research should meet checked against the possibilities at FAIR.

Manned missions into space require systems for Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS). The major tasks of these systems are the control of the habitable volume atmosphere in which the astronauts shall feel themselves comfortable. Essential functions are to control cabin temperature and humidity. For these functions a Membrane-based Condensing Heat Exchanger (MCHX) Technology Demonstrator was developed and performance tested.
