The main goal of this Ariadna study was to determine the radiation hardness of potential future space processors. The AR0 test-chip was used to study the impact of SEUs and SETs on different versions of a hardened processor on UTBB-FDSOI 28nm technology, including DICE flip-flops, and three different hardening level of combinational logic.

Previous research has already demonstrated that graphene field effect transistors can be operated at incredibly high bandwidths, demonstrating 25+GHz with a theoretical limit of up to 500GHz for visible photodetection. Ultrafast photodetection has also been demonstrated on the 10s of femtosecond scale via the photothermoelectric effect for visible photodetection.

ENSEM investigates potential use of energetic neutral atoms (ENA) for space weather monitoring. ENAs are produced everywhere in the solar system due to the interaction between space plasma and ambient particles (neutrals and other plasma populations). Due to the neutrality, ENAs fly straight, keeping the information of the source plasma. Thus, ENAs are expected to visualize the plasma in a remote sensing manner.

The radiation environment in space has severely adverse effects on humans, electronics and materials. The most challenging part of the environment for our understanding of the effects are the highly charged highly energetic (HZE) particles. This study looks at the possibilities FAIR offers for space radiation research. There are two main parts: first the open issues and needed research in space radiation involving heavy ions of high energy and second the requirements a facility for this research should meet checked against the possibilities at FAIR.

In the first demonstrations, the detection of photons with graphene was based on the pn-junction generated by the graphene-metal contact. There the active detector area is a narrow line with length determined by the contact edge and as the absorption of photons incident to a single layer of graphene is 2.3 % at highest, the detector efficiency is rather modest. However, the detector has very high speed, demonstrated up to 40 GHz and predicted to reach over 500 GHz, possibly limited only by the contact resistance.

Scope of the MImOSA2 (Monitoring Ionosphere Over South America to support high precision applications) study was to support high-precision GNSS based applications in South America, analysing, through an original method, GNSS data acquired by a dense network of 50 Hz receivers to assess possible improvements on positioning accuracy when ionospheric degradation is taken into account.

Gaps in existing radiation environment and effects standards adversely affect human spaceflight developments. The most important drivers in the domain of interplanetary and planetary radiation environments were investigated, identifying appropriate data sources and modelling methods to address the needs of future interplanetary manned mission design and operation.
