Development of deep-space optical communication systems (DOCS) poses a number of technical challenges as compared to conventional radio-frequency links. The higher energy of a single quantum (a photon) at the optical carrier frequency implies the need for dedicated modulation formats and receiver designs. The current technical standard for efficient DOCS is pulse position modulation (PPM) format combined with direct detection (DD) which for photon-starved links is implemented as photon counting.

Lunar exploration has only started within the last few decades, and interest is continuing to grow. Space agencies and private investors are looking at the opportunities that it brings and see more commercial interest in it. According to a Euroconsult study, 51 missions to the Moon are planned in 2020–2029, compared to just seven in the previous decade, allowing us to better explore Earth's natural satellite and prepare for long-term lunar exploration and, in the future, deep space.

Detecting anomalies from satellite telemetry is critical for the safe operation of that satellite. Although many approaches to autonomous onboard anomaly detection have already been proposed, most of them have so far only been tested on non-satellite or simulated data. This activity tackled this research gap and proposed an end-to-end machine learning-powered approach for detecting abnormal events in real-life OPS-SAT telemetry data, and deployed it on board a satellite.

The objective of the project was to design, develop and test the compaction device breadboard in a regolith simulant testbed. An experimental test campaign aimed to verify that the compaction device can be successfully used to improve the surface geotechnical properties of two different regolith simulants: GreenSpar-250 analogous to lunar Highlands, and AGK-2010 analogous to lunar Mare regions.

The project entitled "System analysis of deployable components for micro landers in low gravity environment" is conducted within the framework of the ESA contract no. 4000117150/16/NL/HK/hh. Its goal is to perform an analysis and trade-off between the various design options for antennas and solar array deployment mechanisms (including a comparison between the fixed and deployable configurations) of the MASCOT-2 lander in the micro-gravity environment of Didymoon.

The INSPIRE project is dedicated to the study of physical processes and their effects in ionosphere which could be determined as earthquake precursors together with detailed description of the methodology of ionospheric pre-seismic anomalies definition.
