Development of deep-space optical communication systems (DOCS) poses a number of technical challenges as compared to conventional radio-frequency links. The higher energy of a single quantum (a photon) at the optical carrier frequency implies the need for dedicated modulation formats and receiver designs. The current technical standard for efficient DOCS is pulse position modulation (PPM) format combined with direct detection (DD) which for photon-starved links is implemented as photon counting.

AbC is a compact on-board algorithm, initially intended for CubeSats, to measure the absolute direction of a distant beacon with optimised accuracy. The AbC environment anticipates a ground pipeline that has been used with OPS-SAT images to diagnose the ADCS. It has been shown that a ground-truth assessment of the satellite's orientation can be made which, with sufficient data, could allow precise re-alignment of multiple sensors. The ESA contract funded the implementation of the on-board algorithm in C++ and its pipeline in Python.
OBSERVATOIRE DE PARIS
The activity followed the development of an innovative hyperspectral imaging system for remote sensing applications in the thermal infrared. The camera is compact, lightweight and robust. The activity covered the development of the three modules of the imager, namely the spectrometer, the telescope and the detector. The consortium designed and manufactured an innovative spectrometer based on Fourier transform spectroscopy, consisting on calomel birefringent crystals, with working range in the thermal infrared.

Almost all types of satellite sensors are actively or passively cooled, in many cases down to cryogenic temperatures. The goal is to suppress thermal noise in order to achieve the highest possible signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, cryocoolers are critical components in satellite systems, and in many cases key enablers. For instance in Earth Observation (EO) systems, mechanical cryocoolers are preferred over passive ones. The reason is that passive radiators induce constraints on satellite orbit and attitude.

Distributed optical fibre sensors (DOFS) are highly suitable for monitoring temperature, vibration and strain using physical principles such as Raman, Rayleigh and Brillouin backscatter. They convert a standard telecom infrastructure to a sensor network providing thousands of virtual sensors per km using the intrinsic light/glass interaction during propagation.

GaN-based devices are becoming a key technology for millimeter-wave applications. Because of outstanding material properties, recent advances in GaN device designs provided a sharp increase in performances including high power, high efficiency, reliability, linearity, and compact size. These capabilities are ideally suited for numerous millimeter-wave power applications such as wireless networks and PAs MMIC for Q-band frequency and beyond.

The goal of the Powersail project is to demonstrate the potential of amorphous silicon (a-Si) deposited on ultralight space-grade polyimide for solar power satellites (SPS). State of the art solutions are III-V compound semiconductor triple junction-based PV modules, which are 100 times too expensive and one order of magnitude too heavy to build a competitive SPS with terrestrial microwave energy collection infrastructure.

The various players in the space sector activities (equipment manufacturers, operators, and space agencies) believe that the future belongs to industrial components. Industrial components (such as Automotive-quality and commercial-quality components) have already been selected and used for launcher-type or short duration satellite missions. Metallographic cross sections made on plastic packages industrial components, in the frame of these programs, revealed delamination between the chip and the encapsulation resin.
