The study aimed to develop crucial enabling technologies for constructing potential large scale Moon and Mars Planetary surface simulators. It involved the Design, Construction and Testing of five enabling technologies, two related to the simulator chamber design (Task 1) and 3 involving modular sub-systems (Task 2). To summarize, despite several technical challenges functional solutions have been found for each of the five target technologies. Together these constitute vital components for future construction of a (low cost) large scale Mars/Moon test facility

Future long-duration space missions or planetary outposts, such as on the Moon or Mars, will need solutions for producing food in situ, with a view to:

As humans travel further into the Solar System for longer periods of time, many challenges must be solved. One challenge is ensuring an adequate food supply for the crew. Currently all of the food that is consumed by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) is prepackaged on Earth and transported to the ISS. This approach requires a significant investment of mass and the long-term stability of nutrients in the stored food is unclear. Especially the impact of radiation outside of low-Earth orbit may have a negative impact on the stored food.

The goal of this study was to develop a design for a lunar habitat in the close vicinity of one of the lunar poles and to demonstrate the feasibility of the suggested design in view of the available resources. The habitat should operate self-sufficiently in the long term by producing and recycling its own oxygen and food inside large greenhouses and almost exclusively by using solar irradiation power. The proposed concept features a combination of:

This project concerns the proof of concept, design and construction of the first micro-incubator to enable biologists to optimise cell and tissue culture conditions and to get as close as possible to real-life physiological and pathological conditions. In the past, there has not been a mobile and autonomous biomedical device allowing both incubation and observation under multiple conditions in real time.

The objective of this study was to use experimental observations of the ionosphere collected in the past years to assess the performance of climatological ionosphere models, with the focus on scintillation models. This analysis has been performed in order to evaluate the ability of these climatological models to properly support ESA's future needs, to identify weak areas, to propose recommendations for improvements and to implement these improvements whenever possible in existing models.

Human exploratory missions to the Moon or Mars are widely considered as the next logical steps in human space exploration and, lately, settlement. Such space exploration or settlement activities involve humans spending long periods of time in space and, with increasing distance from Earth, no abort possibilities. Crews on such missions have to be self- sufficient, not only concerning food, drink and waste, but also with respect to medical treatment. Health issues are raised by the environmental conditions in space, such as the influence of altered gravity, radiation and isolation.

The objective of this activity was to develop a novel type of X-ray detector that combines two of the most important detector parameters: a large active area and a good energy resolution. This new 'GDD' detector is of gas-filled type, but its internal structure is similar to the widely-used Silicon Drift Detector.

The aim of this study was to assess how space travel modifies local sleep episodes in wakefulness during a visuo-motor task and weather this is related to performance. To this end, specific EEG (electroencephalogram) data previously recorded on board the ISS during the Neurospat experiment (AO-2004, 118) were used.

Testing the validity of general relativity at cosmological and microscopic scales is a challenging open question. The impediment at cosmological scales is our lack of understanding of dark matter and dark energy. At microscopic scales, it is the unknown effect of gravity on quantum mechanics. Recently, space-based matter wave interferometers have been proposed as candidates for addressing certain aspects of both these problems.
