Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are already used in space missions (e.g. GOCE, Swarm, Sentinel, and MetOp, among others), not only as a navigation sensor (either for autonomous orbit and attitude determination or for relative navigation) but also as a science instrument (e.g. for altimetry, global geodesy, Radio Occultation and GNSS Reflectometry applications). However, its use is usually limited to orbits or mission phases below the orbits of GNSS satellites, since GNSS satellite antennas transmit mainly in the Earth's direction.

The space debris environment poses an ever-increasing risk to spacecraft particularly in low Earth orbits (LEO). Due to limitations of existing vulnerability models, increasing the overall survivability of a spacecraft by enhancing the protection of sensitive parts was not possible in the past. The aim of this study was to adopt and develop methodologies that allow increasing the survivability of a spacecraft by varying individual parameters, e.g. the position of sensitive components or the thickness of component casings.

The objectives of the BIOSIS study funded by the General Studies Programme of ESA were: to review the biological risks for the crew due to biocontamination related to air and water quality, to identify knowledge gaps of non-detected / non-mitigated risks and to provide recommendations for future development of automated instrumentation.

Within VASCO the formal verification methodology (FVM) for advanced human- automation interaction in safety critical environments based on models of the overall human-automation interaction (HAI) system has been developed.
The main objectives for this work are summarized below:
- Approach human-automation interaction from a holistic cooperative system

In conclusion this Phase A-B1 study contract has provided:
• Confirmation that the mission concept described in phase 0 is feasible and relevant
• Consolidation of mission objectives and mission requirements
• An updated mission architecture and system design solving many of the problem areas identified in Phase 0
• A roadmap for distribution of relevant documentation and tools to experimenters throughout the project

This document describes the activities and the findings performed in the frame of the ODET-μ (Optical DETection in Microfluidics) project by Kayser Italia, a SME enterprise.
In this project, technologies for the integration of optical components were reviewed to define the “state of the art” in the field of integrated optics for detection on Lab On a Chip devices (LoCs).
LoCs are microfluidics based systems aiming at the miniaturization onto a single substrate (chip) of several functionalities that typically would require an entire biological laboratory.

Current evolution of IP networks has raised the opportunity to consider the use of well-established and mature Internet communication models for use in space missions. One of the most attractive of these models, particularly in terms of distributed and resilient data delivery, is the 'torrent'. A complete implementation of the CCSDS File Delivery Protocol (CFDP) [AD1] has been recently delivered to ESOC.

The overall rationale for such a study has been driven by two factors. Firstly the unexpected on-orbit failure of the Envisat mission in 2012, has now created a specific and immediate ‘debris problem’ for ESA. Secondly, the number of and density of damaging space debris in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is predicted to rise in the future, which has the potential to negatively constrain future space operations for all operators and users.

Proof of Mars Hopper Concept Technologies was an eight-month study funded by ESA’s General Studies Programme from ECSAT in Harwell. The study has focussed on increasing the TRL of key technologies required for the Mars Hopper concept, which were:
- In Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU) subsystem to collect and store CO2 from the atmosphere and deliver it to the propulsion system. Locally generated propellant doe snot require transportation to Mars providing a huge mass saving

In traditional data processing and control architectures for space systems, one or a few centralised computing nodes are used.
All sensors, actuators, and other data sources and data sinks are connected to these nodes in a star– or multi-star topology. Actuators and associated sensors (e.g. heaters and associated temperature sensors) are usually kept separate, with individual harnesses connecting them to the central nodes.
