Telemetry data is the most valuable asset provided by any spacecraft. Increasing the data amount sent from space to ground increases a mission’s value, but often this comes with increased costs. Compression of Space generated data provides great benefits to both the large ESA missions by increasing the mission science throughput and small missions (which typically have low bandwidth) by increasing the traditional low downlink rates of these missions. One solution to this problem is the POCKET+ lossless compression algorithm, which is currently being standardized by CCSDS.

In applications such as space traffic and disaster response management, there are growing public and private capabilities. Multiple different stakeholders can detect and identify events (space collision predictions, natural disaster definitions). Augmentation of events definitions lead to confusion for local authorities, operators or any users of these information for costly decisions. This project, Space DAO, sets the base infrastructure to agree on consensus mechanisms to reduce confusion and augment trust in key decision making information.

Persistent Responsive Real-Time Earth Observation small satellite constellation mission (PERTEO) is a study dedicated to provide a global democratic service to support disaster management. Earth observation and satellite-based communications play a key role to support disaster management targeting responsiveness and the persistence of the service. In the terminology of on-demand Copernicus services, responsiveness is determined by the lead-time and latency. The persistence is determined by the availability and by the revisit time of the service.

"Don't try this at home" (named after one of the AI ships from I.Banks Culture series) is a concept demonstrating the benefits of having a Cognitive Cloud Computing infrastructure in Space. Such an infrastructure will provide users a comprehensive and scalable set of commercial services to EO sensors and space-based data providers. It enables several applications by efficiently collecting and fusing information on target objects from observations of different platforms at various wavelengths, resolutions, and times. As a result, it leads to timely, precise information.

The objective of the proposed PNT Traffic Light project is to develop a continuous 24/7 performance monitoring tool for EGNOS/GNSS (and particularly for GPS, GALILEO and EGNOS) on the northern and arctic region of, at least, EGNOS coverage area. In addition to just EGNOS, the tool shall be designed to support assessment of the performance of also other GNSSs (at least GPS and Galileo).

This activity investigates how mega-constellations can be used to provide low-Earth orbit (LEO) spacecraft with broadband low-latency services, a novel Concept with potential to disrupt spacecraft design, operation, and performance by allowing spacecraft to access mega-constellations’ enormous resources (Tbit/s throughputs) and global coverage at a lower cost than traditional data relay systems and ground station networks (two to fifty times cheaper, that is, a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per month for a daily net capacity from hundredths of Gbit up to almost ten Tbit).

Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) are rapidly approaching market-readiness, with numerous partly-autonomous and teleoperated systems either under development or already performing operational demonstrations for applications such as bathymetric surveying (SEA-KIT Maxlimer, Deep BV), maintenance of offshore installations (Thales Halcyon), and commercial shipping (Yara Birkeland, Maersk VISTULA-Class).

The emergence of the classical world from quantum theory, and especially of a consensus among different observers, is a long-standing problem for the foundations of quantum theory. Using recent advances in multipartite quantum information theory, we shed light on these problems. Besides their interest for fundamental physics, they are related to quantum sensing and metrology using a quantum-network of stations, a situation of interest for the potential use of quantum-based measurement probes for exploring space and the Universe.

In summary, this activity used simulated and analysed parameters for each component to define the requirements for each application. For the flight model, the most important parameters are power consumption, cost and mass of the components. The power consumption and mass of components are acquired from the datasheets. Since space qualification is needed for these components the cost estimation is a difficult task. For example, even for the passive component the price difference between non-qualified, qualifiable and qualified devices is rather high.
