When setting up a lunar station, technologies for the use of locally available materials are crucial. Such technologies drastically reduce the need for transportation from Earth. This project idea aims to provide proof of a key technology, namely Mobile – Selective Laser Melting (M-SLM) for building large structures on the Moon.

The production process of full-CFRP struts, was before only suitable for low volume production rates (~10 struts/month) and including worker safety critical processes. This approach had to be reviewed and changed to enable production rates >100/month and improve worker safety. The activity focused on the:

In order to enable lunar exploration in a sustainable manner, it is necessary to develop technologies that allow the use of lunar resources in-situ. Additive manufacturing techniques are being studied for in-situ resources utilization on the Moon (e.g.: solar or laser sintering). The results of these studies, presented samples with low mechanical properties due to the formation of defects and cracks within the final product.

Institut für Textiltechnik der RWTH Aachen University (ITA) and Institute for Structural Mechanics and Lightweight Design RWTH Aachen University (SLA) have already spun MoonFibres from regolith simulant. Gradel SARL uses the xFKin3D technological process to produces ultra-lightweight structural components made of various types of fibres and resin. This technology requires less material to create parts with equal structural strength as the ones produced in traditional ways. The produced parts can be 2D or 3D parts.

Nowadays, human Moon exploration, and the consequent desire to establish a permanent settlement on its surface, represents one of the most fascinating challenge to face. The permanent presence of a human outpost very far from Earth raises the problem of the huge amount of payload required for the settlement, as well as the need of rapid and in-time supply of material and spare parts useful for all the activities carried out in-situ, including the realization of medicals tools and patient-specific back-up implants.

As on Earth, space debris should not only be seen as a threat. Instead, the value of waste as a recycled good should be understood. On Earth, this potential is already fully recognised. The German recycling industry alone generates more revenue than the entire European space industry. Nevertheless, this treasure was never lifted in space.

This study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility, use and functionality of carbon fibre-reinforced flexible epoxy (CFRFE) materials for self-deployable space structures (such as deployable tape-spring hinges) by designing, simulating, manufacturing, testing and correlating a classic (100% carbon fibre-reinforced plastic -rigid resin- CFRP) deployable tape-spring hinge and a CFRFE deployable tape-spring hinge and compare their mechanical and dynamic behaviours.

The project aimed to establish a structured approach to an optimised part or component by applying Concurrent Design methods. It intended to incorporate all necessary disciplines and competencies that are required for a potential spacecraft part. Within the activity, advanced manufacturing included various novel techniques, not only additive manufacturing. It means that the Concurrent Design approach was developed for the engineering of units to be built with a broad range of advanced manufacturing technologies.

Motivation: This study aimed to develop promising robotic fabrication methodologies for a fibre-based in-situ robotic fabrication process, for application in a lunar habitat as an alternative to existing additive manufacturing methodologies. Previous work has verified that fibre composite fabrication processes are capable of a high degree of automation and structural performance.

Several studies have addressed the building of a lunar base either under ESA or other space agencies and entities. These studies have looked at conceptual designs, often of one specific element of the base, while most of the requirements are not adequately or not at all taken into consideration.
