Due to the ongoing miniaturisation and increased performance of electronics devices, alternative cooling methods are required, specifically mechanical pumping loops (MPL). Passive two-phase loops are not capable of cooling ESA's expected power densities up to 300 W/m2, so pumped two-phase loops are forecasted to replace their passive counterparts. According to Lapensée et al., “the most important component of a MPL is the pump and a pump failure directly results in MPL system failure, a reliable pump is therefore of vital importance". Solid state optical refrigeration is the only active cryocooling technique that is truly vribration free, due to absence of moving parts and mass transport, with significant potential for use in future space missions. However, the overall wallplug efficiency is still relatively low in current approaches. One alternative approach investigated here is using a solar pumped laser (SPL) to drive the optical cryocooling process. This approach could offer higher efficiency by eliminates two conversion losses.

Many types of science missions focus on Solar System targets with harsh thermal environments, such as Mars, the Moon, asteroids, comets, and other bodies at the fringes of the Solar System. Traditional spacecraft avionics rely on the storage of electrical energy in electrochemical systems (typically secondary batteries) for covering peak energy demands and periods where no electrical energy is generated (Lunar/Martian/cometary night, etc.).

The technical activities covered in this project allowed the creation of several numerical tools that can predict the thermoelectric/thermomagnetic response to different thermal loading conditions, material properties (thermal and electrical) and geometrical configurations.
Several numerical studies were performed using both commercial and dedicated numerical analysis procedures for the assessment of the thermoelectric behaviour of simple geometries under specific thermal loading conditions.

There is an increasing need for ever smaller pulse-tube coolers. These coolers have the characteristics necessary for space applications because the absence of moving parts in the cold finger makes them extremely reliable and any induced vibrations are typically smaller and easier to control.
But these types of cooler are less efficient and have a lower power density. Typically, this is resolved by increasing their drive frequency, to reduce amplitudes and displacements, which means that the coolers are smaller
