Background and justification:
•Conformal antennas which can be integrated in the avionics of a launcher are a key point for telemetry, safety and GNSS data in launcher applications. Moreover, they minimize aerodynamic drag by being mounted on or embedded in the curved surface of high-performanceaircraft. COALA project combines antennas with low aerodynamic drag with superior RF performance to provide optimal platform performance. Moreover, the project reduces the European dependency to foreign solutions.

Power units have been using the same integration system since decades. It is based on a vertical module approach that limits considerably the thermal access to the baseplate. Moreover, some of the modules have very low dissipation but still use the same system. As a consequence, these modules occupy some precious space that is scarce for the high power consumers. This becomes a limiting factor in high dissipation units. Power units like Power Conditioning Units (PCDU) and Power Propulsion Units for Electrical Propulsion (PPU) easily dissipate more 300W.

For space applications, the reliability of any component with respect to mechanical failure is a key requirement, especially in the case of ceramic components, where a single defect at a critical position may lead to crack initiation, growth and fracture of the component under mechanical or thermomechanical load. Instead of proof testing, an automatized and reliable method based on Computed Tomography (CT) non-destructive testing methods supported by a fast data evaluation would reduce ceramic components development risk and cost.

The life span of space craft in orbit is mainly limited by the amount of available fuel for attitude control and repositioning tasks. The possibility to refuel a satellite after some years in orbit could therefore extend the duration and thereby lower the costs of space craft operation, significantly.

A port of the Rust standard library to RTEMS was successfully implemented, demonstrating Rust's potential for efficient and reliable onboard software development. The research also focuses on quality assurance aspects relevant to ESA ECSS standards, including documentation, testing, and product metrics.

GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMT) are an enabling technology for a wide range of space applications in Telecommunication, Earth observation, navigation and science requiring high power and/or low noise amplification. At the present, these processes in Europe are limited to Ku-band (0.25um process) and the required components from the US and Japan fall under export restrictions. There is an urgent need for making a competitive (in terms of performance and price) European version covering applications at higher frequencies between Ka- and V-band.

The spectral filter is a critical element to reject unwanted background and straylight onto the receive detector during day and night operation. The activity consists in elaborating its optimized design (interference filters vs. fiber Bragg gratings vs. volume Bragg gratings) after trade-offs taking into account the overall design of the optical antenna (e.g. numerical aperture of the beam, tunability vs. spectral width, etc.).

Optimisation tools have a strong heritage within space mission design, allowing higher performance and/or enabling missions that would otherwise not be possible. However due to the disparity of design and modelling tools across the different design domains, such optimisation is typically only performed at subsystem / domain level (e.g. trajectory or control optimisation). ;The integration of system-wide design information into a single digital system model, affords a new opportunity for optimisation at the system-level.
