Objectives
The objective of this activity is to update and enhance the software tool PANGU up to the version 5.

Description
PANGU (Planetary and Asteroid Natural Scene Generation Utility) is a software tool to generate synthetic images of the surface of planets and asteroids for simulations of vision based navigation. Currently, the tool is in version 4.20 and is being widely used in projects with entry descent and landing and small body navigation scenarios.
;;;
The objective of this activity is to develop the next generation of PANGU-type real time image generation systems for cameras (VIS and IR) as well as LIDARs and multi-spectral imaging, etc. This activity will deliver a prototype of a Sensor Simulator for Processor In the Loop Testing of GNC systems. The activity will also provide high fidelity rendering of terrain imaging (Moon and Mars mapping).
In addition, this activity will include the maintenance (SPR correction, etc) of the PANGU tool for versions 4 up to versions 5.
;
The main tasks to be developed within this activity will include:
  • Possibility to apply albedo maps to asteroids
  • ;
  • Possibility to specify the BRDF (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) of boulders (e.g. Hapke)
  • ;
  • Possibility to import in the Surface modelling non-ICQ (e.g. OBJ format) asteroid shape models and convert to ICQ (Implicitly Connected Quadrilaterals), at least for non-multi-lobed bodies, so that they can be extended/enhanced in PANGU
  • ;
  • Enhancements on the camera model (e.g. to support smear (CCD read-out modelling) or improvements on the camera PSF modelling to support multiple weighted Gaussians)
  • ;
  • Improvements in the Qt GUI interface
  • ;
  • Additions to support video generation
  • ;
;
;The first phase (200K, 12 months) will be dedicated to provide high fidelity rendering of terrain imaging, maintenance tasks, enhancements of the camera model and improvements of the GUI interface.
