This is for example the case of radiometry, for which an accurate knowledge of the full pattern, even in the low side lobes, is required. This is also the case of radar systems where good knowledge of side lobe levels within determined angular ranges is required to ensure high resolution. In particular, when the antenna operates at lower frequencies, interaction with the platform cannot be neglected and has a non-negligible impact on side lobe level. The tool has been built developing a marine litter dispersion numerical model coupled to hydrodynamic information, plastic data and evaluated with satellite derived information. The coupled model is envisaged to work in coastal regions and applied to the littoral region of the Barcelona city as a proof of concept with the aim to extend the concept to other regions. Quantifying where and how much plastic debris enters the marine environment in a global spatio-temporal sense is critical in formulating solutions to the plastic pollution problem. Satellite-based measurements can help to survey remote, isolated locations in which direct observations are sparse, costly, and difficult. An in-cloud image processing software built by a GSTP Element 1 activity with Italy has already been employed by the World Bank. Currently, the tools available on the market to view, edit and process Earth Observation images are mostly desktop-based. But, as high performance computing progresses, there is more and more need for Earth Observation image processing to be moved onto the cloud, to minimise data transfer.
