The current operational methods of land cover change detection are based on bi-temporal analysis for two points in time. These approaches are applied to 3 to 6 years mapping campaigns, while land cover changes occur continually. ;With this 3 to 6 year gap between inventories, all land change processes occurring in between are not captured. Full-fledged Land Cover Continuous Monitoring system of the land evolution is provided for EEA. Belgium GSTP G611-047EO SPACEBEL SA. 2018 - 2021 Quality Control Metadata Management System for Land Monitoring Services Investigating spectroscopy and forward model improvements for atmospheric retrieval of methane in the thermal infrared The aim of this study was to explore and consolidate the possible sources of methane (CH4) biases in retrievals from thermal infrared (TIR) sensors, to establish necessary actions and perform the related work for mitigating biases. The study distinguisged three types of error sources: spectroscopic knowledge and input data to radiative transfer models (RTM), forward model errors, and instrument biases. For achieving this goal, the study addresses three main objectives, corresponding to three identified tasks: France Discovery 15/029 SPASCIA 2018 - 2021 Investigating spectroscopy and forward model improvements for atmospheric retrieval of methane in the thermal infrared MicroMHiDe: Technologies for Microsatellites Multispectral High Definition Imager. The development of miniaturized high performance avionics allows the building of microsatellites platforms with the high pointing stability and accuracy. This new generation of microsatellites could embark high-resolution optical systems, but given limited volume and power, the instrument will be limited in SNR. A new generation of hybrid detectors, known as CCD-in-CMOS detectors, can allow circumventing SNR limitations by operating in Time Delay Integration (TDI). This type of operation was, until recently, limited to CCD detectors that are very costly and power hungry. Belgium GSTP GT11-016MM Aerospacelab 2018 - 2021 MicroMHiDe: Technologies for Microsatellites Multispectral High Definition Imager. Atmospheric Missions DAta packaging (AMIDA) The core of the activity is the development and demonstration of technologies to homogenize the data for joint use: this is highly relevant for Atmospheric Sciences data where a large variety of data in terms of sensing time and geometry and dimensionality (1D to 3D) prevent the combined use of various datasets. Nevertheless, the developed methodologies can be applied to other domains, to create meaningful subsets to cope with the growing of the data stream (large amount of EO data coming from different platforms for the same domain). Austria GSTP G611-049EO SISTEMA GMBH 2018 - 2021 Atmospheric Missions DAta packaging (AMIDA) Advanced Processing Techniques for Next Generation Multi-channel SARs Over the last decades, the spaceborne remote sensing community has been focused on the development of imaging radars at RF frequencies such as S-band, L-band, C-band and X-band. ITU regulations currently permit the use of Ka-band for active spaceborne microwave remote sensing but only few missions are considering applying this frequency band such as the SARAL mission with the ALtiKa instrument (launched 2013). Germany TDE T106-404ET DLR - German Aerospace Center 2016 - 2021 Advanced Processing Techniques for Next Generation Multi-channel SARs Risk Mapping Engine The use of analytics functions with EO and non-EO data will bring the following benefits: Capacity to characterize the vulnerability of assets/population using selected available models (TBD: GEM-like) Capacity to produce risk maps using multi hazard (floods and landslides), exposure and vulnerability information Capacity to generate loss mapping (e.g. estimation of monetary losses from potential affected building in an area) integrating selected available financial risk model Features: Spain GSTP GT21-019ES INDRA SISTEMAS 2018 - 2020 Risk Mapping Engine Control ASIC for Earth Observation Infrared Detector Array Hybrid infrared detector arrays combing a sensitive diode layer bonded to a CMOS readout circuit are baselined for many current and upcoming Earth Observation missions. This activity aims to develop a breadboard, using a custom ASIC, capable of providing the necessary clocks and bias voltages to operate the detector as well as providing 4-channel video processing and digitisation, leading to a two-chip (Control ASIC + hyrbid detector) detection system. The design will be split to allow separate or combined use of bias and clock generation and video processing and digitization functions. Norway TDE T117-503MM INTEGRATED DETECTOR ELECTRONICS AS 2018 - 2020 Control ASIC for Earth Observation Infrared Detector Array High Power GaN C-band Transmit/Receive Module Demonstrator Next generation of C-band SAR utilising Digital Beam Forming (DBF) techniques allow significant coverage improvements at high resolution as confirmed in several ESA studies in the field. Several TRP studies in the field of Digital Beam Forming (DBF) have confirmed the feasibility to achieve 400km swath width at 5m x 5m resolution, while Sentinel-1 achieves currently 80km at 5m x 5m resolution. The DBF technological elements are currently under development in the GSTP activity ?Integrated Tile Demonstrator (ITD)? based on extended Sentinel 1 requirements. Italy GSTP G611-008ET THALES ALENIA SPACE ITALIA SPA 2016 - 2020 High Power GaN C-band Transmit/Receive Module Demonstrator sat4EO Developing a high-performance, but low cost satellite with very high resolution products would open the Earth Observation market to a new audience, creating a path for new applications and ultimately encouraging competitiveness. These products are currently not often covered by the space industry and access is very limited. As such a new low cost satellite, with turnkey technology could open the market considerably. A new activity, with GSTP Element 2 and Spain, has developed a spacecraft to do just that. Spain GSTP G621-053SY DEIMOS ENGINEERING AND SYSTEMS SLU 2016 - 2020 sat4EO Radio climatology models of the ionosphere: status and way forward The objective of this study was to use experimental observations of the ionosphere collected in the past years to assess the performance of climatological ionosphere models, with the focus on scintillation models. This analysis has been performed in order to evaluate the ability of these climatological models to properly support ESA's future needs, to identify weak areas, to propose recommendations for improvements and to implement these improvements whenever possible in existing models.
