This technique is extensively used in terrestrial applications like base stations where power efficiency is getting more and more attention. Power efficiency is also of concern for space and the Doherty concept could certainly help in designing more efficient PAs. Ka-band is now being considered for mobile services that could offer very high capacity as compared to the existing ones at L-band. To continue this path towards a dedicated mission, performance assessment against simulated real-case scenarios of ML is key. We want to build a simulator to estimate ML signal at TOA from a set of scenarios representing the various applications already targeted by the community (e.g. France Discovery 20-D-T-TEC-01-k ARGANS LIMITED 2020 - 2022 A Simulator for Marine Litter Observation from Space TISPLALI There is growing global concern over the chemical, biological and ecological impact of marine plastic pollution. Every year many millions of tons of plastic enter the global oceans but where it goes remains largely unknown. Remote sensing has the potential to provide long-term, global monitoring but for plastics in the ocean it is still in early stages. UK Discovery 20-D-T-TEC-01-g North Highland College 2020 - 2022 TISPLALI Efficient straylight characterisation and verification techniques for Earth Observation instruments The straylight characterisation and verification of EO instruments are quite challenging due to the stringent requirements regarding straylight and radiometric accuracy typically set for such instruments. The straylight verification generally requires an input source as an extended black (Lmin)/white(Lmax) scene with a very sharp and high contrast transition between the dark/bright region. The realisation of such a source is not straightforward as it requires careful design so as not to introduce additional straylight by its own. Even if new technologies have already supplied aids to pilots for the navigation risk reduction, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) reports that the majority of accidents could have been avoided by providing suitable input to the navigation decision-making process. Currently there is no product that exists to do this. Si CCDs are a well-established technology which, whilst being an “old” technology, are still world leading in certain applications up to a wavelength of ~1μm. UK Discovery S 2020-07 Teledyne e2v 2021 - 2022 Ge on Si Feasibility Tool for GNSS System failure modes investigation The activity aims at developing a tool that can investigate the failure modes of GNSS systems. Such tool can then be used for detection of failures, and/or to characterise the tolerance of GNSS system or subsystem architectures to failures. Focus will be given primarily to failures and failure modes that may impact critical services (e.g. Safety-of-Life). The tool shall be able to model GNSS systems and subsystems (i.e. ground or space segments, elements and/or components) and its failure modes in a modular way. These systems rely on specific coherent sources for laser cooling and trapping, atomic state preparation and interrogation of the cold atomic samples. There is also a parallel requirement to deliver these specific lasers (at the experiment) for predefined periods. Wavelength knowledge to a high accuracy and precision, control and/or removal of the laser frequency drift are key additional attributes of the desired system. This system is known as the Clock Control Unit (CCU).
