The methodological approach to the study has been to identify and validate the most simple and effective solutions which ould be practically implemented with known and existing technologies and approaches. The current situation is that the marketplace remains extremely competitive. The main concern is that the unless European technology keeps up with competition, especially from US solar cell manufacturers, then European products will not be competitive and technology independence will be lost. Continuity of development remains critical in order to maintain this position. Germany TDE T703-604EP AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH 2019 - 2022 Improved multi-junction solar cells with up to 33% efficiency at end of life Preparation of enabling space technologies and building blocks: Low Cost Solar Panel Assembly The Low-Cost Solar Panel Assembly GSTP Project has the high-level objective of increasing the European TRL level for innovative, high power to volume ratio, versatile, low-cost solar arrays, in this way contributing to cover the gap in this area with US manufacturers and to improve Europe global competitiveness. This new generation of solar power systems are also key to electrical-propelled missions in the whole range of orbits of interest Italy GSTP GT17-137TIag OHB Italia S.p.A. 2020 - 2022 Preparation of enabling space technologies and building blocks: Low Cost Solar Panel Assembly Lazarus radioisotope generator Radioisotope generators provide electrical power for spacecraft by converting the energy released by the decay of radioisotope fuel into electricity. Non-thermal converters (voltaic devices) make use of the photoelectric effect much in the same way a solar cell does. They are much easier to miniaturise for future chip-sized deep space probes, however performance quickly degrades due to radiation damage. Italy Discovery EISI_01_2021 Progetti e Campioni Srls 2021 - 2022 Lazarus radioisotope generator Effective use of Germanium Today, Ge is used as a growth template for III-V based solar cells and also serves as the lowest active junction. While the thickness of the Ge on solar cell level is around 140µm, actually only 10-20µm are really active. Therefore, in order to become thinner and lighter, solar cell manufacturers start to thin down the Ge wafers after cell processing by grinding, etching or lift-off processes (to reduce weight). However, this Ge waste is today not recovered since no economical process exists. In the frame another project, TAS-B develops New Space PPU modules to drive thrusters in the same power range, for platforms with 100 V regulated power bus. In the frame of the project “BBK for Low Power PPU”, TAS-B addresses the low range of the New Space market: smaller thrusters for smaller platforms with lower unregulated bus.
