Objectives
To implement a methodology and tool support for applying SysML in ECSS context, enforcing a rigorous engineering solution with higher upfront model consistency and improved reuse across projects and within the supply chain
Description
The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is recognised as a cornerstone technology to enable the digitalisation of the engineering workflow and to foster model-based systems engineering (MBSE), still requiring tailoring for the space domain.
An ESA SysML Toolbox has been created, consisting of a profile and prototype implementations in COTS tools to model space systems in compliance with SysML. The Toolbox has been applied successfully in the EUCLID and PLATO missions, however indicating the need for even more standardization and closer integration to the ECSS standards.
;
The methodology will concretise and complement the elements identified in the MBSE best practices handbook, and be tailored/extended specifically for ESA project needs. This to ensure a future proof solution, taking into account the proposed SysML v2.0 standard, the evolution of the ECSS standards and the supported COTS MBSE tools, the on-going development of the European space systems ontology (T708-612SW) and the implementation of the MBSE Hub (T708-604SY).
;
The activity contributes to a significant reduction in cost as the guidance provided by the methodology and the enforcement through the tool support will prevent common errors and pitfalls. It will also allow to further leverage the approach by ensuring that interoperability with non-SysML solutions, and integration with other discipline specific solutions, is considered upfront.
;
This activity encompasses the following tasks:
- Enhance the current ESA SysML Solution to cover a larger part of the ECSS scope, with particular emphasis on interface definitions and traceability (providing a white box modelling approach)
- Update and improve the tool support identified for the methodology, including basic training materials and user manuals to support end-users.
- Ensure alignment with the space system ontology and MBSE Hub.
;
It is foreseen that the updated ESA SysML Solution is tested in a real ESA project and LSI engineering setting, to ensure that both the methodology and the tool support are fit for practical use. The roll-out and practical adoption of this solution is not part of this activity.
Software shall be delivered under an ESA Software community License, so that any individuals or entities within ESA member states can access to it and can provide update to the community of users.
