Objectives

To support the system engineering in early design phases, by performing design optimisation on selected parameters of the digital system model.

Description
Optimisation tools have a strong heritage within space mission design, allowing higher performance and/or enabling missions that would otherwise not be possible. However due to the disparity of design and modelling tools across the different design domains, such optimisation is typically only performed at subsystem / domain level (e.g. trajectory or control optimisation). ;The integration of system-wide design information into a single digital system model, affords a new opportunity for optimisation at the system-level. Such an approach could, for instance, lead to solutions that increase performance, reduce time/cost or have a higher reliability. ;
This activity will investigate and propose a generic mechanism for multi-domain optimisation. The end result shall include a prototype, which shall focus on a specific multi-domain use case. ;
;
This activity encompasses the following tasks:
- Identification/development of optimisation tools/algorithms which use information stored in digital system models to optimise system-level designs in Phase A/B. AI solutions could be exploited.
- Prototype of a use case (e.g. optimisation for mass, cost, data return, etc across several domains) based on user-defined cost functions.
;
The use case to be establish should cover elements of the full mission, and as such include elements of both the space and ground segments. The tool would also be defined taking into account compatibility with the Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) quot;System Factoryquot;, and could exploit data exchanged via the Digital Engineering Hub. ;This activity may also build upon previous Agency activities, including the 'Robust Design Optimisation of Space Missions' and 'Modern attitude control of Earth Observation satellites with large flexible elements'.

Software shall be delivered under an ESA Software Community Licence, so that any individuals or entities within ESA Member States can access to it and can provide update to the community of users.
