An important bottleneck to monitor surface energy fluxes and evapo-transpiration is the lack of accessible land surface temperature and land surface emissivity data with sufficient revisit time and spatial resolution. Background and justification: ​

  • Xenon storage is challenging for small satellite platforms due to the strict thermal management and the presence of high-presure components.​
  • A way of solving this problem is by having a different storage method. By storing the xenon in a cool gas generator, the xenon is bound chemically before the activation of the xenon cool gas generator. This way there is no need for high pressure components and the strict thermal management of the whole system is no longer needed​

This project aimed to develop support for NanoXplore’s NG-Ultra architecture within the open-source place-and-route tool nextpnr, as an alternative to the proprietary Impulse tool. Extensive benchmarking showed that nextpnr’s performance is generally comparable to Impulse, though some areas need improvement. The results confirmed nextpnr’s capability to support large FPGAs and perform netlist transformations and placement optimizations. Future improvements may include support for high-speed I/O and SoC, and further placement optimizations.

The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is recognised as a cornerstone technology to enable the digitalisation of the engineering workflow and to foster model-based systems engineering (MBSE), still requiring tailoring for the space domain.
An ESA SysML Toolbox has been created, consisting of a profile and prototype implementations in COTS tools to model space systems in compliance with SysML. The Toolbox has been applied successfully in the EUCLID and PLATO missions, however indicating the need for even more standardization and closer integration to the ECSS standards.

Active battery management is not currently used on ESA missions (apart from reducing End of Charge Voltage during the cruise of deep space missions to increase battery lifetime) but does see some limited use in cubesat programmes. Active battery management is used extensively in terrestrial energy storage. By monitoring the state of charge and voltage of the battery, the power in/out of the battery can be actively managed. This allows several benefits such as sizing a battery more conservatively because different operational modes can be accommodated more easily.
