Objectives
The objective of this activity is to develop an immersive 3D environment for the training of Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) procedures in Virtual Reality (VR).
Description
Compared to current practices, where training of AIT procedures typically uses physical models of the actual hardware, manufactured at discrete moments in the spacecraft development life-cycle, the virtual reality AIT trainer, called ICARUS, shall offer substantial benefits by enabling realistic and immersive training scenarios. This shall provide more flexibility, as there is no need to have any physical models made available for the sole purpose of training. In addition, this shall leverage the knowledge retention of the AIT processes and procedures in an intuitive manner. ICARUS shall support systems integrators, test centers, launch organisations and their customers, both in their internal AIT procedures and in the coordination and hand-over of their work.
;
The current activity shall build upon the previous GSTP activity, G617-241TAhz - De-risk assessment: Assessments to prepare and de-risk technology developments of ICARUS VR-Tool, where a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) was developed, focusing on the design and validation of a sufficiently realistic representation of tools and cables in the training environment.
;
The objective of the proposed activity is to develop an ICARUS Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that has the maturity to support users. Several steps are still required in the design, development and validation of ICARUS. Notably, this includes functionality for users to incorporate their own digital models and t-raining procedures in an automated manner. This is essential to reduce the costs of preparing training scenarios.
;
This activity encompasses the following tasks:
- Updating the MVP definition and design, to incorporate the latest inputs from stakeholders.
- Development of the MVP, with a focus on maturing the functionality included in the current PoC and the development of additional features required for usage on-site.
- Further design of the virtual training environment used to incorporate digital training tutorials and procedural checklists in the MVP.
- Validation of the MVP during the development process and on-site.
