As of the 21/09/2017, the Ammonium Dichromate which is contained inside MIRA powder, will not be authorised anymore. Thus, Roxel, the manufacturer of MIRA, will not supply anymore the powder. The MIRA is used on-board Ariane5 (igniters, detonators, squibs) and on-board satellite pyro valves. In addition to the REACH issue, it shall be noticed that the lifetime of the MIRA is 12 years maximum. It is therefore mandatory to identify an alternative to replace the MIRA to solve both the REACH and the life time issue. However, the sensor solution using this technology has been developed and qualified for space outside Europe. Several potential users of the technology in Europe are interested to use the technology for mainly their specific mechanism related needs and also robotic system related needs. The application or service domains are multiple including Earth Observation, Space Science and Robotic Exploration. Radiation shielding mainly depends on particles species and energies: a multi- layered shielding approach could therefore be seen as the most effective shielding at the lowest mass. In previous studies, it was observed that a potential gain of 40% to 50% in shielding effectiveness with respect to Aluminum shielding (at equivalent mass) could be achieved with materials like Tantalum, Polyethylene- Tantalum, Polyethylene-Tungsten and Kapton-Tungsten. Growing fungi structures in space The mushroom-forming fungi Pleurotus ostreatus (PO), Trametes versicolor (TV) and Schizophyllum commune (SC) are known to effectively colonise organic material. These fungi were grown on the aquatic fern Azolla filiculoides (AF), the fastest growing plant on Earth, and that can fix its own nitrogen. SC showed the best growth on AF. Therefore, growth of this fungus was determined under microgravity conditions and high radiation dosage (up to 200 Gy) and related to melanin production. For most of the new materials properties and performance data under hydrogen at high pressure and/or low temperatures are missing. The very limited available data do not cover the real operational conditions. To get access to the missing data the capabilities of the existing material characterization laboratory at ET were extended.
