The use of the VLSI technologies (through high density, low power consumption digital ASICs) together with RF miniaturisation techniques (Analogue ASIC, MMIC,System on a chip etc.) are being used in many devices in order to develop lighter and smaller transponders. Particular examples of these are:
 
  • The TTC subsystem for the future deep space missions, such as Bepi-Colombo.
 
  • Lander and orbiter proximity link transponders/transceivers.

    SpaceWire defines the links and the network as well as some higher level protocols. The users are free to define the network management and the Failure Detection Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) scheme adapted for their application. With the increasing spread of SpaceWire more users ask for recommendations how to perform network management and FDIR for their application. In this activity a set of typical use cases of SpaceWire networks shall be prototyped and recommendations for network management and FDIR shall be found.

      The common practice to manage the above functions in a Flight Software project is to isolate well known and established functions like libm, and to characterise these functions with respect to input ranges, errors and performance. The mathematical library from newlib is widely used as a basis for flight software in the European space industry, but it is developed in the open source community, where, however, most of the mathematical functions are based on implementations from Sun from the 1990s.

      The Serial Peripheral Interface Bus or SPI bus is a synchronous serial data link de facto standard, named by Motorola, that operates in full duplex mode. Devices communicate in master/slave mode where the master device initiates the data frame. Multiple slave devices are allowed with individual slave select (chip select) lines. Based on the result of two running TEC-EDD activities (Modular RTU - GSTP, Standardization of Digital interfaces - TRP) this activity will prototype SPI protocol(s) and physical layers for space applications.
