VIRSI is a very compact spectral imager developed by Cosine BV. It allows to perform imaging in VNIR in various configurations (depending on the on-sensor filter options).
An agile and low-cost in-orbit validation is proposed. This request for funding is intended to make VIRSI flight ready, ruggedized, tested and characterized. To achieve the objectives of this activity, the following tasks are included:

Marine litter causes enormous damage to ecosystems and has become a concern for human health, since plastic has been found entering the food chain. 

To try to solve this, research and industrial communities are now working on systems for detecting and/or capturing marine litter debris. Satellite-based detection approaches, in particular, are still in the early stage of their development and need to be validated with ground truth data and observations.

Currently the size limit for primary mirrors of large telescopes is - due to the available Ariane-5 fairing - typically at 3.5m (Herschel). Future science (and most likely also Earth observation missions) will call for larger telescope sizes due to more demanding requirements on the light collecting efficiency and angular resolution.

The Project 'Plastic waste and the Black Sea, monitoring litter at sea and on the land from Sentinel-2 data' was funded by the Discovery element of ESA's Basic Activities, and it had the following objectives:

  • To facilitate systematic marine debris detection by Earth observation for tracking them before they beach, if ever, by improving a detection algorithm already sketched and tested, and develop a true detector from it
  • To test various methodologies for the detection and identification of terrestrial illegal dumping sites

Imaging, Radar and LiDAR system technologies are required to enable the realisation of fully self-driving (autonomous) cars, known as Level 5 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Of these sensor types, commercial LiDAR is far behind the other options in terms of endurance, reliability and cost. These concerns are primarily due to the current LiDAR systems use of scanning technology that relies on many moving parts.

The development of miniaturized high performance avionics allows the building of microsatellites platforms with the high pointing stability and accuracy. This new generation of microsatellites could embark high-resolution optical systems, but given limited volume and power, the instrument will be limited in SNR. A new generation of hybrid detectors, known as CCD-in-CMOS detectors, can allow circumventing SNR limitations by operating in Time Delay Integration (TDI). This type of operation was, until recently, limited to CCD detectors that are very costly and power hungry.

The pre-operation demonstration will be used as a proof of concept towards the World-Radio Conference to demonstrate the feasibility of the VDES in a representative in the field trail. The activity will also provide the capability of monitoring the VHF maritime spectrum both from external interference sources (such as land mobile) as well as intra-system interference caused by VDES different components (such as VDE terrestrial components).
