A new development to enhance the security of low-cost software platform solutions is considered essential. Requirements like dependability, scalability, obsolescence and re-usability shall be taken into account as well. On current navigation satellites, de-tumbling is usually achieved in short duration using the onboard chemical propulsion thrusters. With future Navigation satellites looking at using all-electric propulsion satellites, these manouevres are to be performed by xenon-fed auxiliary thrusters. COTS (xenon cold gas) auxiliary thrusters are limited in the max thrust level provided and the de-tumbling duration, in the absence of chemical thrusters, is a concern. Optical fibre-based ignition technology for launcher RCS Current launcher RCS thrusters operate with storable, hypergolic propellants. They do not need an ignition system, but these propellants have a negative environmental impact and, due to the high and therefore expensive effort for safe handling and fuelling of the tanks, alternatives have to be found to replace them. One alternative is the use of cryogenic propellants available in the launcher for the RCS thrusters, or storable green propellants for thrusters on long-duration missions, combined with a laser ignition system.
