Conventional lithium ion batteries use organic highly flammable liquid electrolytes increasing the risk of catastrophic failure due to thermal runaways. In addition, the use of carbon anode in Li-ion batteries limit the maximum energy density. Based on scientific results, it is believed that the use of solid state electrolytes will significantly improve the electrochemical and thermal stability range of the battery cells.

The study aimed to develop crucial enabling technologies for constructing potential large scale Moon and Mars Planetary surface simulators. It involved the Design, Construction and Testing of five enabling technologies, two related to the simulator chamber design (Task 1) and 3 involving modular sub-systems (Task 2). To summarize, despite several technical challenges functional solutions have been found for each of the five target technologies. Together these constitute vital components for future construction of a (low cost) large scale Mars/Moon test facility

Due to the large increase in manufacturing volume of space systems components, coming e.g. from the Mega Constellations and Cubesats domains, the standardisation of flight hardware is progressing faster than ever.

The main goal of this project was to fabricate porous electrodes used in fuel cells. A porous electrode consists of a catalyst layer (CL), microporous layer (MPL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL). GDLs are conventionally made of carbon paper or cloth. However, there are several drawbacks, including degregation in alkalin media, deformation, and consequently, closure of pores under compression, and randomness of pore charactristics (e.g., pore size and distribution). As an alternative, metallic GDLs with much greater mechanical strengths have recently been introduced for alkalin environements.

The increasing interest for Deep-Space cubesat is leading in the near future to the need of adequate deployment systems (``Cubesat Dispensers``) suitable for deep space applications, taking into account all the environmental (e.g. radiation) and mission constraints (e.g. need for power supply to the cubesat, possibility to upload SW updates, need for accurate release conditions).

The activity is aiming at developing a new generation of mass memories able to support File Based Operations while sustaining high data throughput and providing large capacity.
