This activity shall develop a Payload Interface Data Handling Unit (PIDHU) for SWE hosted payloads which shall provide power supplies at various voltages required by space weather/environment instruments limiting the mass required for individual instrument voltage transformers. The PIDHU shall receive data streams from instruments through various protocols including UART (RS-422/485), SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553 and CAN Bus and provide data though a single data interface adaptable to hosting spacecraft requirements.

Design for Demise is being applied in order to reduce the on-ground casualty risk. However, several parts of the spacecraft, due to performance requirements or long development cycles (e.g. Optical instruments, large mechanisms, etc.), may not be able to significantly change materials or design. During re-entry, each of these elements may generate several debris surviving re-entry increasing significantly the on-ground casualty risk.

The technology demonstration payload (TDP#1) on the Alphasat GEO spacecraft is a coherent optical communication data relay demonstrator for optical inter-satellite links and Ka-band downlinks. It is a precursor development from the German Space Agency (DLR) for the European Data Relay System (EDRS), but not commercially utilized. It is therefore the ideal platform to test optical feeder-link technologies in a representative environment.

The previous GSTP de-risk activity has demonstrated the manufacturing feasibility of an inner nozzle shell. A full size inner part has been produced in 253MA Stainless Steel and a subscale part in Carpenter 21-6-9 Stainless Steel.

The main benefits of this manufacturing process are a potential recurring cost and lead time reduction for the nozzle extension (since the number of parts, welds and other manufacturing steps required for the nozzle manufacturing would significantly decrease).

Microwave heating of regolith is a potential pathway to heat and achieve reaction temperatures in regolith. In this study different types of regolith analogs shall be heated by microwave energy and the process shall be optimized for power efficiency. The capability provided by SpaceWire to develop data handling systems based on high-speed networks allows much greater performance but implies implementing communication bus management techniques specific to SpaceWire. As network management is not part of the basic SpaceWire protocol ECSS-E-ST-50-12C (Rev.1), it must be provided to industry in the form of an additional standard.

As humans travel further into the Solar System for longer periods of time, many challenges must be solved. One challenge is ensuring an adequate food supply for the crew. Currently all of the food that is consumed by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) is prepackaged on Earth and transported to the ISS. This approach requires a significant investment of mass and the long-term stability of nutrients in the stored food is unclear. Especially the impact of radiation outside of low-Earth orbit may have a negative impact on the stored food.
