Currently, spacecraft operation teams are usually notified of non-nominal conditions when specific system parameters exceed preset threshold values. These out-of-limit (OOL) alarms are reasonably simple in nature, each referring to a single or a set of parameters or conditions, and do not necessarily offer operators a deeper insight into a system?s condition in isolation.

Reduction of EMI emission is usually considered a secondary optimization criterion in the design of DC-to-DC power converters for space applications and their filters, where power efficiency, mass and volume are driving design criteria. Several basic methods and techniques exist to reduce EMI, e.g. Filtering and shielding. Typical designs use these basic reduction techniques to a limited extent to meet generic requirement limits. The achievable improvement in EMI reduction needs to be however traded-off against increases in mass, size and power loss.

This activity aims at developing a generic solution, adaptable to the various (but limited in number) types of interface rings, to insulate the exposed surface once the spacecraft has been separated from the launcher. It could consist in a series of MLI flaps with a passive mechanism keeping it away from the Launch vehicle Adapter in quot;open positionquot;. The flap is automatically deployed in quot;closed positionquot; to protect the interface ring from the external environment (cold Space, Sun flux, planet flux).

Industry pushes towards higher operation temperatures of diodes while reducing cost. SiC technology with plastic packaging offers promising results able to match these requirements. Some applications (i.e. spaceship solar arrays) requirements are as high as 250°C. This application was considered as potential target application for the project test units designed.

Three different device types were designed, manufactured, and tested in the frame of the project using well known SiC Schottky dies, three mould compounds and two die configurations:

Communication between crew and ground on future deep space missions will be impacted by communication delay (signal latency), caused by the finite speed of light and radio waves across great distances. The one-way latency caused by the distance between the Earth and the Moon is about 1.3 seconds. The actual latency at lunar distances during the forthcoming Artemis missions is expected to be even higher due to the various signal processing steps associated with the digital communication protocols. Estimates currently vary up to 10 seconds one way.

System modelling tools allow analysis of the propellant chemical and fluid dynamic behaviour through the complete propulsion system, from the tanks through the connecting pipes, valves, manifolds, combustion elements and nozzles. These tools support the design and verification of rocket propulsion systems and troubleshoot anomalies during the utilisation phase.The appearance of new propulsion concepts necessitates extensions of these numerical tools.
