It is part of ESA’s Exploration Programme, named “Terrae Novae”, encompassing all ESA’s human and robotic activities related to the exploration and utilisation of Earth Orbit, Moon and Mars. The “Mars Ice Access Mission Study” is a Pre-Phase A level study. The objective of the study was to propose a preliminary design of a mission aiming to: France Preparation 22-P-M-HRE-04-a AIRBUS DEFENCE AND SPACE SAS 2022 - 2023 Mars Ice Access Mission Study Enabling Harbor to Harbor Autonomous Shipping in Sea Ice Conditions The ENHANCE (Enabling Harbor to Harbor Autonomous Situational Awareness in Sea Ice Conditions) project is aimed to study How to improve the autonomous navigation and situational awareness in the maritime domain by utilising ML and AI concepts. For this end, we utilise both traditional RGB cameras as well as IR cameras to obtain as diverse as possible data set of sea-ice conditions to train a ML model that can identify an ice tracks and objects, such as buoys, that can help in navigation. The study aimed to develop crucial enabling technologies for constructing potential large scale Moon and Mars Planetary surface simulators. It involved the Design, Construction and Testing of five enabling technologies, two related to the simulator chamber design (Task 1) and 3 involving modular sub-systems (Task 2). To summarize, despite several technical challenges functional solutions have been found for each of the five target technologies. Together these constitute vital components for future construction of a (low cost) large scale Mars/Moon test facility Denmark Discovery 21-P-O-HRE-01 Aarhus University 2022 - 2023 FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MOON / MARS PLANETARY SURFACE SIMULATOR SUBSYSTEMS. Avionics and Mechatronics platform for internal ISS robotics applications - Space Exoskeleton System (Human Hand Exoskeleton + Avionics and Mechatronics platform) The activity shall develop three prototypes of the exoskeleton system, one to be qualified for usage inside the International Space Station and one to be up-loaded as flight model to the international space station. The third model will be a ground reference model. The test campaign of the system can be undertaken as an agency furnished item. The activity shall develop a full mechatronic system, including all material to package and transport the system to orbit, control electronics and computers. Space agencies and private investors are looking at the opportunities that it brings and see more commercial interest in it. According to a Euroconsult study, 51 missions to the Moon are planned in 2020–2029, compared to just seven in the previous decade, allowing us to better explore Earth's natural satellite and prepare for long-term lunar exploration and, in the future, deep space. It hence allows for an unsurpassed level of monitoring via real-time and continuous assessment and evaluation, precise diagnostics, maintenance prediction, downtime prevention and maximised equipment effectiveness. The Digital Twin concept is getting more and more traction, and is envisaged notably for space missions or for spacecraft. ESA has investigated walking rovers for several years (GSP CESAR, TERP ARAMIE and SPACEWALKER, NPI with DLR and ethz). Recent advances in leg motoring (serial-elastic actuation) make possible to overcome the issues highlighted in previous ESA work. There is potential of realising a walking rover for space use in short time. This new generation of solar power systems are also key to electrical-propelled missions in the whole range of orbits of interest Italy GSTP GT17-137TIag OHB Italia S.p.A. 2020 - 2022 Preparation of enabling space technologies and building blocks: Low Cost Solar Panel Assembly Beyond the Mission Paradigm: Federated Reconfigurable Infrastructure via Edge Devices in Space (FRIENDS) Early space missions consisted of bespoke components communicating with facilities on Earth. Today this model has been updated with off-the-shelf components and reusable launch systems that lower mission cost into low-Earth orbit. Extending this model to develop a sustainable off-Earth economy requires bringing the concept of reconfigurable computing agents to deep space. In total, ClearSpace expects there will be 370 potential client satellites that will reach their end of life due to the limited fuel they have remaining over the 2026–2041 period. ClearSpace believes a strong market penetration rate is feasible, as more than 30% of all the potential satellites belong to just seven satellite operators.
